In the context of a band.

First that come to mind are Tim C. in Audioslave and Tetsu from L'arc~en~Ciel. I remember the guy from Taking Back Sunday used some distortion really nicely before. Flea too.

Not so much about over-the-top, sawtooth-blaring messy chainsaw, but rather, appropriate, tasteful playing. (Cliff Burton, for example, is a huge influence for me, but I thought he overdid the distortion a little)

thoughts, opinions, people?

Bootsy Collins.

I love his tone. Especially live.
It's a very chainsaw-ish tone, but in the way that it really cuts through everything.

Maybe not the best, but Larry Graham springs to mind, I wouldn't expect overdrive where he uses it, but when he does, it fits so well.

Furthermore: Jack Bruce.

Entwistle? Never thought of him using overdrive. Just a lot of treble. But bass amps weren't all that clear back then.

My faves for overdrive/distortion are Jack Bruce, Felix Pappalardi (Mountain), Tim Bogert with BBA, John Wetton with Crimson, Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) Chris Squire (I used to have a Bass Brassmaster fuzz), Tim Commerford, and Larry Graham of course.

I bought that first Peavey "The Bass" amp back in the 70's because it had a great overdrive feature.

In the later years he used alot of overdrive. I have his Instructional DVD, and there he is clearly using overdrive. I think the Live at Leeds sound sounds quite a bit overdrived to.
