BG + DB, too similar?

I'm starting Highers tomorrow, and I've chosen to take music. (obviously )
The thing is, I really want to start Double Bass, but my head of music has no faith in his students and doesn't think I'll be able to learn 5 minutes of Double Bass over the next year. He wants me to learn a lame piece on glockenspiel for an easy pass. I'm not really that interested in getting straight A's in music, acceptance to my Uni of choice just requires a performance of high quality, not grades.
So, the strings teacher was really backing me up and even offered her spare time to teach me, and there's not a single DB student in the school,(yet two double basses are sitting around gathering dust). Then the ginger prick (music teacher) said that the two wouldn't be accepted as separate instruments. Is this true? couldn't find the regulations on the sqa website (scottish qualifications authority)

For those too lazy to read, can you sit your A-Levels/Highers/16-year-old American exam on both Electric and Double Bass?

Probably. But why bother with DB? Unless you've got a burning passion for it, stick with what will get you a good grade in the exam.

I really want/need to have a second instrument, and love DB's. Getting to play one for my exam would allow me to apply for half a period a week of DB tutoring, although to get out of class twice a week is unlikely.
I am considering dropping my in-school electric lessons, as the technique the taught clashes with my main teachers' techniques. I guess that would kill two birds with one stone.
I'll discuss it on Monday.

Edit: And I'm sorry for posting in Bassists, didn't realise

You have how long to learn DB before your exam thing?

A year, but it's basic DB, I am fully aware of how hard it will be

It's all muscle memory bro, you just need to put in a lot of hours with it.

and be ready for pain and blisters of a whole other realm than you've felt before

I'm a year in to half-***ed self study on DB... If I was working towards a specific piece / test, I could have done it in that time.
