Big respect for John Campbell...

Lately I have been learning a few metal songs and decided to give a few Lamb of God songs a shot. I always knew that John Campbell was a good bassist because of his furious fret work through songs like Laid to rest and Walk with me in hell, but the consistency of his picking is what really gets me.

He picks up and down and has fluid movement across all his strings, never missing a note. It may be just me, but the ease at which he does this while still maintaining a really punchy tone is truly outstanding IMO. And I also love how he follows the riff an octave lower, adds such a sweet sound to their music

OK, enough Campbell love for the moment lol

haha i was thinking the exact same thing a few days ago, learning redneck was very challenging, with all the frethand positioning as well as maintaining a strong pick attack. I find playing LoG stuff a bit easier with my fingers, but thats probably just because thats how i started playing, i challenge myself to learn their material pickstyle. But i agree John Campbell is a beast

Mr. Soul,

I agree there, but I personally believe that Campbells fretting abilities are way better. The guy is a beast!!

We just did a thread on him a week or two ago if you wanna search for it. Some good stuff in there.

But ya, big LoG and especially Campbell fanboi right here. What I wouldn't give to get to play with Chris every friggin' day...

hahaha yeah that would be awesome!!

I got to meet campbell at a pre-show party once and showed him a tat I have of my Warwick and he loved it, ended up dragging me around by the forearm to show the rest of the band!! Later at the gig I waved the tattooed arm in the air and he saw me, and gave me the horns. Really cool guy.

Is really one of metal basses darkhorses!!

Have you tried grace yet? That for me is the definition of hard fretwork. According to John he used to really hate the Laid to rest riff because it really hurt his left hand.

ATM I can't play any LOG songs through, the closest is Ruin and the higher part of the main riff is impossible, you need to stretch across 4 large frets and keep everything fluid! It really hurts my pinkie.
