bill laswell-effect or nature of bass?

i've been listening to this band called massacre with bill laswell on bass. i notice he gets this growl or snarl on his bass and was wondering if this is his natural bass sound (maybe the nature of the p-bass) or some effect or his amp setting or something. does anyone have an idea?

Hard to say without a sample. laswell's sound is very mutable depending on the project. he uses loaads of studio trickery but have heard hem very natural as well.

i've seen him play through marshall half stacks in addition to bass amps,
using a gibson thunderbird. had a pedalboard with some boss and dod fx. it was a while ago, though.
amazing show!

He plays a fretless P-bass and that might be some of the growl you hear. He also uses one of those pretty cheap DOD envelope filters set so it just pumps out the low "vowel". One of my favorite musicians!
