Bill Wyman's fingers!?

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw a great concert film last night, a show in Texas from the Stones 'Some Girls' tour 1978. A closeup of Bill Wyman showed he had the middle and ring fingers on his left hand taped together. I got the impression this was not due to injury, he was right on all night. Is this his answer to Keith's 5 string thing? Does it force simplification or something?

Well, those two fingers aren't naturally completely independent. Maybe using them separately on tour was causing stress. I've heard of people seriously hurting themselves doing exercises to make those two fingers independent. And we know how technical those Stones basslines can be.

He had a broken finger at the time, so he had it taped to the adjacent finger. I saw the film as well last night, and was amazed at how well he played despite the injury.

I'm reading *Stone Alone*, Bill's 1989(or so) autoboography, and I just passed this part.

Wyman's fingers also are extraordinarily short. This is why he favored short-scale basses with thinnish necks over the course of his career.

A week before the Fort Worth gig Bill was leaving the stage at the end of the St Paul show, walked through a curtain, and fell 9 feet to the floor. He was knocked unconscious, injured his shoulder and broke a knuckle on one of the fingers of his left hand. He spent the night in hospital for observation.
