Simply mind-blowing. |

I was never a huge fan of his style/tone and don't really find it melodically appealing. Actually, I think he sounded best while playing Geddy's Wal during the Rush sound check on the Presto Tour (wish there was video of that). All this aside, I do respect the man for what he can do... just not my type of thing. |

All I know is that Stu Hamm's tone was clear as a bell while playing a similar style with the tapping and all. You could also hear every note that Jeff Berlin played, probably because he favors the bridge pickup and plucks near the bridge. I won't deny the man has serious chops though!

| | A figment of our exaggeration | | Join Date: Aug 2007 Location: Way Out West | | | I was watching "That Metal Show" on VH1 last week. They had Duff McKagan & Glenn Hughes as guests.
Billy Sheehan was the "guest musician" that sat up in the audience to play some stuff on their way in and out of commerical breaks. He was doing some really cool riffing.
15-20 seconds at a time is tolerable.

And you know the old saying that ugly can be fixed, but stupid is forever. Well, if the ugly tone is your only complaint, that can be fixed. He's still one of the smartest and best soloists on the planet.
Any bassist who can keep up with the likes of Paul Gilbert and mirror him lick for lick has something special going on.
And I think it goes without saying that you'd have to like bass solos to begin with to appreciate this. Saying you hate bass solos so this sucks is hardly a revelation.

I don't particularly like his style (too much emphasis of speed and cool trickery and not enough on melody) but I can't fault him for his talent, of which he has plenty! I saw 2 tuning changes mid solo, bass "sweeps", very fast yet precise finger playing, tapping (and more tapping), 2 handed tapping and arpeggiating (just made that word up, too!).
Credit where it's due - he's very skilled.
