BILLY SHEEHAN IN THE STUDIO

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi ,

I read a lot of threads about how to get Billy´s sound , there are good information about it ( Pearce preamp , clean ( lows ) blended with distorted ( mids and highs ) , and I want to put my 2 cents ( is well said ? I,m from Spain )

Here´s a diagram of the bass chain recording for the album Bump Ahead , he uses his rig and add more pieces from the studio , is a complex tracking but is very clear , but I think that the most important piece of gear are Billy´s hands and soul ( I go to make a search on Ebay , maybe someday he wants to sell them )

I hope to help with this info !!!

Aupa !!

De nada ,

till I get this diagram I didn,t know that he uses a 19.9 ms of delay in the P-pickup , I suppose that is to get a denser sound ,
maybe it adds glue between the clean and distorted sounds ,
he runs too a clean sound from the P-pickup .
A lot of bass tracks , but maybe in the mixing stage they didn,t use all , and they have a lot options to get the final sound.

This delay is what strikes me too. I didn't know that some bass players use a delay. A reverb I understand but why a delay ?

that was a long time ago for that setup though. his rig is way more simplified now and he hasnt used the delay for a long time. as for why he used it, it was such a short delay that it just sort of made his sound bigger. it wasnt like you really heard a delayed note. it just fattened it up, sort of like if you use a chorus for a doubling effect. billy's advanced bass dvd from a couple years back has a detailed segment with him and his (current at the time) rig. no delays, no crossovers

Billy,s Tones

True , but there are several tones from Billy ,

the first Mr Big record has the sound cleaner and the chorus is more obvious

Lean into it has a very 70,s bass tone , really fat

and Bump Ahead is to me in the middle of both ...

The bass on DLR records was less prominent but in his place

The Talas Years has a more percent of distorted sound but great equally !!

but I,m sure that if you record him only using his bass and compression straight to disc , you will get very close sound cause

he has that touch in his hands , his fingertips I,m sure that will be different in hardness ,texture and form ( due to countless hours improving his chops , than a bass player that play his basslines only with his band , it makes more different in sound than the people think

similar to beat a kick with felt beater or a wood beater ...
