I've seen him live twice with Steve Vai and he is not just about chops, flash or fast playing. The guy has a tone like thunder and can lay down some serious groove.
I've just listened to some of that "Behold...the Arctopus" band that Colin Marston is in and they are hilariously bad.

After looking him up... I just confirmed that he is way off of any 'best bassist' lists I could think up. |
