If you have a female singer, there are numerous newer Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi tunes you can cover, too. Crowds love Bonnie Raitt's version of "Runaway", the old Del Shannon tune. The only downside is the harp player has to keep switching between 4 harps to cover his solo! (But we all laugh at him and tell him it's good for him.)

OK - you asked for it!

Keep in mind we are not the "standard" blues trio. We are a 5-piece band with female & male vocals, harp and occasionally keys & acoustic guitar in addition to the drums-bass-strat. We also throw in a few newer dance tunes (can you dance to "Cumbersome"???) to keep the bar patrons happy.

Chain of Fools - Aretha, but we do a very slowed down, blues'd up version
Good Man Good Woman - Bonnie Raitt & Delbert McClinton
She Runs Hot - John Hiatt
Still Wonder - Jonny Lang
The Only One - Melissa Etheridge
Bring Me Some Water - Melissa Etheridge
Goodbye Little Girl - ???
Dangerous Mood - Keb' Mo'
Pump It Up - Elvis Costello
You Were Still By My Side (original)
Rain Came Down (original)
Little by Little - B.B. King, Lowell Fulsom

Honky Tonk Woman - Rolling Stones & everyone since
Mustang Sally - yeah, gotta play it or we'll get lynched
Take Me To The River - Al Green (NOT the Talking Heads version)
Joey - Concrete Blonde
Blue On Black - Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Can I Change My Mind - Tyrone Davis
Hard To Handle - Otis Redding / Black Crows
Time of Our Lives - ??? (Bonnie Raitt, maybe)
Runaway - Bonnie Raitt's version of Del Shannon's song
Chit Chat (original)
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
It Hurt So Bad - Susan Tedeschi

Good Day For the Blues - Storyville
Messin With The Kid - junior Wells
Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean - Susan Tedeschi's version of Ruth Brown's song
I’m With You - ??? NOT Mariah Carey
Your Little Secret - Melissa Etheridge
Time I Spend With You - Brooks Williams
Cumbersome - 7 Mary Three
Can’t Go There Anymore - Storyville
Pensacola - Joan Osborne
Take It Down the Road (original)
Love Me Like A Man - Bonnie Raitt
Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer - Popa Chubby

What other tunes should we be adding that are somewhat similar - newer, upbeat-er blues tunes?

I noticed an absence of Clapton and SRV tunes. Crossfire or SRV's version of Superstition would be good. Why does love got to be so sad, Layla, Outside woman blues would be good Clapton (in various incarnations) covers. Both artists are well known enough to get the audience's attention. Another good song, though a bit more traditional blues is Joan Armatrading's Give me one reason to stay here. Maybe a Jimi Hendrix tune other then Red House, Cross Town traffic maybe.

What do you all think of the Blues Brothers? I hear some people consider them a legit blues band while others don't.

I remember an interview being done with some of the artists who's works the Blues Bro's were covering. All were very glad that their music was being brought to a new audience. While Belushi and Ackroyd's stage antics may have been a little tongue in cheek, the back up band was spectacular and it was obvious both men had a genuine love for that music. I was listening to the essential Blues Bro's CD today, great stuff. I have no problem calling them legit.

Of course, a lot of what they did was old school R&B, not blues

their band was among the best players out there. belushi could definitely belt out the blues. aykryod was no slouch either.

and they are a great source for material. they covered some of the best tunes.

Duck Dunn is a great bassist. Does anyone know if he is still currently playing?

I was just at his myspace page and I believe it says he is currently "semi-retired". Which I believe means he plays when and where he feels like it

Hey! What should I do to be memeber of the club?
I 'm in a band called The Twisters, where we play different kinds of blues : from Steve Ray Vaughan and Hendrix to some classics (Kansas City, got my mojo, I don't need no doctor..), from some great but less known artists (Coco Montoya) to some jazzier bluesman (Robben Ford, John Scofield...) plus we play some original compositions where we mix the classic blues we love with funk and jazz elements, so we're somehow near to Robben Ford's kind of blues...my father is a bluesman (harp player) and we played together in a classic blues band and in a Blues Brother tribute band (I had a blast playing Duck's lines...)...so as you can see blues is part of my life!!
Some of my favorite players in this kind of music are: "Duck " Dunn, Roscoe Beck , Willie Weeks, Nathan East and the guy who played with Robert Cray (don't know his name!)

I love the BB!

I was just a young kid and remember seeing them do "Soul Man" on Saturday Night Live, and I thought it was one of the coolest songs I'd ever heard!

Regardless of what anyone thinks, they brought the Blues (and yes R & B) to a huge audience and of course Dunn and Cropper (Stax baby!) and the other cats backing them up were/are absolutely top notch musicians.

And I highly recommend both movie soundtracks.

Yeah, the Blues Brothers was good stuff, even though most of the songs were R&B. It was the first time I heard Duck Dunn since the only other song that I knew, before that time, was "Green Onions". His playing just propelled the band. Plus, the cafe scene with Aretha, was too funny!

Can I join too? Former bass player in a Beijing blues band, now a drummer in another one with my girlfriend on fretless bass. Used to play a 51 P reissue.

WillieG.....Kansai Blues Society.....in Kobe Japan.

We have a monthly blues jam that draws about 40 people and alot of good times.

I have been playing Blues music for some years with Eric Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King and Magic Sam.....plus a few others.....till my CD player broke the other night.....anyway blues is a great way to feel the Highway of life.....

I use a 57 RI P-bass (SJB 1 pickup)with La Bella Flats....Jamerson set and an Ashdown 180 15".....it works fine for this situation.
