Love the Blues. Both the Oldies, but also the youngsters. Those who keep the Flame burning. Like Jonny Lang for instance.

My current band however is primarily blues with a little rock and country thrown in. I would like a number please.

He played w/Jimmy Reed in the 50's, and his nickname was Big Town Playboy, although I never heard him referred to as that. He was a kind and gentle man who played finger-style and had a great voice. His drink of choice was coffee w/a lot of cream and sugar - I never saw him take a sip of alcohol. There are a couple of primitive grainy VHS vids on youtube of the band right before I joined at a club called Elsewhere's. Sadly I don't have much in the way of documentation - easy pics just weren't as common back then.
I was a midwestern white boy whose first impressions of blues came via the Stones, the Animals and all the other British rockers of the 60's, and later Super Session/Kooper Session, BB, Muddy, Robert Johnson et al. Played all around town including a surreal joint called The Golden Slipper on the East side and was one of the first bands to play at B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted when it opened, w/Sunnyland Slim, Snookie Pryor, Little Walter and of course Eddie, Steve and Eddies sons Larry and then Timmy on drums and occasionally Vera, Eddies wife on vocals. I felt and still feel very fortunate to have had that experience. One (Blue) Monday night at B.L.U.E.S. w/hardly anyone in the club Eric Clapton and his band-mates walked in and heard Eddies set over a pitcher and left. We didn't know it was him, and from what I recall we played well while they were in attendance. He had a beard and long coat and they all looked like German tourists, which was common. After they left the excited bartender/owner filled us all in. Eddie sort'of shrugged.
I don't play blues much these days but once it's in your bones it influences everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4dqNmeO5gM Eddie and the band at Elsewhere's 1978 shot with an ancient but cutting edge of the time video recorder.

It's not an exaggeration to give him credit as one of the fathers of rock-n-roll, as the famous "Jimmy Reed beat" (think Big Boss Man) actually featured Eddie on that distinctive and famous guitar vamp. As a VeeJay artist, Eddie often performed anonymously on Chess recordings of the day, where his name couldn't appear on the credits legally, but his distinctive finger-picking style is unmistakable.
I knew Eddie well. In fact, I'm the bass player in that video you just posted! (and I have a few other Elsewhere VHS tapes; it was a series of gig films funded by the Illinois Arts Council, '76 maybe)?. It was a tremendous opportunity to play with Eddie, as everybody in the Chicago (and Austin) blues scene knew Eddie, and they'd often ask him to back them up. Luckily for me, they'd often say "and bring your bass player along". Through Eddie I got the opportunity to play behind Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Littlejohn and a host of other Chicago legends. Eddie was solid as a rock on rythm, an inventive and distinctive lead player, and a great mentor to many on guitar, and always displayed a wonderful sense of humor and calm demeanor on stage.
Fortunately, when Eddie passed away suddenly in '85, he left behind a family of talented musical offspring: Tim & Larry on drums, as you mentioned, but also Vera & Brenda (B'Lah) and Eddie Taylor Jr. all have Chicago blues careers of their own today. Eddie Jr. even plays Eddie Sr.'s old Gibson ES-345 & Twin Reverb! A great musical family and one of the first families of the blues!

Yes, let's not ever forget Eddie Taylor and his family - long live their contribution to music and blues specifically.
Talking about his cherry red ES-345, for me an image that's been burned into my memory was the stage lights reflecting off of his Vox Python strap. I always stood behind him to his left and that (and his playing!) would hypnotize me while we played! But mostly I was keeping an eye on his left hand as he never played a song the same twice! Thanks Tom! |

Everything from Chicago style to Texas style to Boogie Blues. I was in a blues band from 2002 to 2006 that toured extensively and played Bike Week in Laconia, NH, Myrtle Beach, SC, Daytona, Fl and Sturgis, SD in front of as many as 25,000 people. Got to do a lot of shows with some very well known bands.
