This is a very big field with a nearly endless list of possible artists to start listening to. Practically all modern pop music styles are based in the blues. If you want to go all the way back to the beginning you could try Bessie Smith (the Empress of the Blues) or Louis Armstrong. Most people probably think of Chicago style first when the blues is mentioned. Check out Muddy Waters, and most any artist on the Chess label. By the way, Willie Dixon is one of the greatest bass playing songwriters of the last century. Good Luck.

A few suggestions for electric blues artists, if I might:

Muddy Waters, as mentioned above
Howlin' Wolf
Elmore James
Lightning Hopkins
Little Walter
Sonny Boy Williamson I and II
Lazy Lester
Robert Nighthawk
Sunnyland Slim

That's some basics there.

I'm no huge Blues afficionado, though I certainly respect the genre. One album I have which I still think is fantastic after what must be thousands of listens and "jam-alongs" is Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills- Super Session with Harvey Brooks on the bass and Eddie Hoh on drums. If there's any one single Blues recording which helped me learn Blues, this one has to be it. And not only as a bassist, but guitar, drums and keys too. Check it out on iTunes or Amazon. I think you're going to find some good stuff here, and via the posts of others.

Good luck with it.

SRV's original bassist was Tommy Shannon who also played with Johnny Winter and others. He has a video out which is pretty good.

Another vote for Mr. Shannon. Even more so than him is the bassist for the group Robert Randolph and the family band. He is the best bassist to appear in a blues group that I personally have ever heard.

Tommy Shannon was Stevie's Bassist from 1980 on. Lenny was his wife.

To the OP, I'd recommend B.B. King Live at Cook County Jail.
I also like Live and Well album which I know was Jerry Jemmott. Albert Collins Bassist Johnny B. Gayden. Willie Weeks, and the Funkiest Bassist James Jamerson (Motown).
Put your ear out locally too, there are probably some great players around you who wouldn't mind helping you out.

God Bless
Later R.

Also for check out the Neal family.

Kenny and Noel neal. played on the Carey Bell stuff off Alligator records in the 90's. Along with Johnny B. Gayden.

Also for old school funky blues, look for james cotton, you want the song 1 more mile, the youtube version is not as tight or funky as the album cut, not by a long shot.
