The bass was owned by Harvey Books (Goldstien) who was working as a session bass player during the Highway 61 recordings. Brooks went on to record with Mike Bloomfield in the Electric Flag. He also recorded with the Doors and with Miles Davis during many of the Bitches Brew sessions.

He probably never played bass on any recordings. Not that I know, it's just that it wouldn't be completely out of the question that he was just messing around on a bass while he was in the studio with the photog present.
