I realized today that I absolutely hate Booty's playing (outside of James Brown's stuff of course). It's annoying and he kind of pisses me off. I tried for the longest time to like him, but after listening to his new album, which was awful, I just can't stand him. Is this wrong? I kind of feel like it is.

Are you serious? You like who you like. BTW, Bootsy's playing with James Brown was the best bass work ever done in that band.

Yeah man totally agreed about his stuff with James Brown; there's no denying that. It's all the stuff after. It's also stemmed from my huge obsession of Funkadelic lately. It makes me wish that Parliament and Funkadelic never formed P-Funk.

i get what your saying if you just look at the last couple albums. he seems to like rappers a little too much now. but i dont know how you could not like his work with clinton or rubber band stuff from the 70's.

Bootsy is a legend, but I think his innovation has peaked.

Don't get me wrong, he's solid and a great inspiration - I love his personality as much as his bass playing - I haven't heard the new album, but the last 'new' solo album I bought several years ago left much to be desired. Maybe I was expecting Rubber Band sounds - meh.

Bootsy is Bootsy is Bootsy.

You hit the nail on the head there - he`s out there. I haven`t heard anything "new", but like others said, some of his Rubber Band stuff was explosive ! YouTube - ‪Bootsy Collins - Body Slam (live in Japan)‬‏ One of my fave Bootsy clips !

Yes it is very wrong to dislike Bootsy. Now go to bed without dinner.

I thank God they formed P-Funk! I'm not a big fan of early psychedelic funk-rock Funkadelic. R&B was getting really soft, safe and predictable when "Mothership Connection" and "Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band" came out. To me, P-Funk was a much-needed revelation. It was like George Clinton and the Funk Mob came back to reclaim R&B/funk. Some early Funkadelic lovers actually call mid-'70s P-Funk "disco." P-Funk help save funk lovers from disco! IMO, YMMV, to each his own, etc., but Bootsy's work with both James Brown AND P-Funk is revolutionary.

If you go in expecting a 'chops fest' with Bootsy, you're going to be disappointed. Bootsy is all about the Funk and having fun playing music! Enjoy it for what it is!

Skeet and Cordell displayed more chops live with tonality while Bootsy's albums and the albums he did with P-Funk had more musical content. Having said all that, when the marquee says a Parliafunkadelicment thang, you know you had the Brides and Parlet along with P-Funk then the lights go down...when they come back up Bootzilla, I'd never been to a more rocking concert. Bootsy's minimalist approach works well live when Bernie Worrell and Junie Morrison are/was in the lineup.

I saw Bootsy's Rubber Band live in 1978. I didn't know if he was the fastest or most technical player around. All I know is I got funked up that night, and Bootsy threw down! I have no idea how he performs now, but Bootsy was the real deal back in the day.

All I got to say is check out this video. Yeah, its dated but it doesn't get any funkier than this. In addition, you ever tried singing counter rhythm lyrics, and holding down the groove simultaneously? Haven't heard all of his latest stuff but he changed the bass game forever in terms of groove, funk, and showmanship! He gets an eternal pass in my book.
