Sad news; may he rest in peace.

Here's some video of Catfish (and Bootsy) playing with James Brown

RIP, Catfish. He played some of the funkiest rhythm guitar lines ever. What an excellent, sharp touch he had; it never sounded by-the-numbers. Others have played the same lines, but they don't sound like Catfish. P-Funk loses yet another great one. We'll never see a collection of musicians like that again, IMO. Thank God for recorded music and video.

My heroes on guitar, if you could call them that, were almost all rhythm players. Those were the guys who always blew me away. Phelps Collins was at the top of my list, creating some seminal strokes that are the keystone of funk music IMO IME. "Greasy", perfect funk guitar. Can't explain what feel is but I knew when I heard it.

The funny thing is that many of the really good rhythm guitarists I've come across in life seemed to have an inferiority complex because they didn't/couldn't do crazy solos. My college roommate back in the 70's was like that. He wanted to play like Al iMeola but he played like Catfish. I'd tell him he didn't know how lucky he was. There were far less guys who could do what he could do.

Imagine the Bootsy period of James Browm without Catfish. I can't.
