Boston/ Tom Scholz

I read that Tom played bass on Don't Look Back and Third Stage with a Gibson bass with a Fender Jazz pickup, but that's all I could find. Does anyone have any more details on what Tom played on these albums?

I think he's underrated as a bassist, some of those lines are smokin (no pun intended). I'm presuming on Third Stage he played through a Rockman, but other than that I'm clueless how he got his tone.

Any help?

Thank you!

Tom Scholz played a Gibson bass, a Victory series I believe with a Jazz pickup. Very tasty lines with killer tone.

A great band. Hard to imagine in all their years together they only released like 3 or 4 records. RIP Brad.

The thing that got me on the tour promoting their first album, "Boston" during Winter 1976/Spring 1977 was that it was said that all that fancy/shimancy engineering was not lost on their live performances! Not sounding 'nuff like the studio records supposedly led to the demise of LIVE Beatles performances by comparison.

If I had known that Boston's lawsuit was going to have such a devastating effect, I'd have made it to Memphis to see them on 11/21/76, fer shure!
And, being a hand-to-mouth college sophomore, I waited...

Snippet:
1. First album, "Boston" ranks as the second best-selling debut album in U.S. history.

I gotta ask - who is #1? (I know I could Google it, but this is more interesting!)

The number 1 debut album of all time would be Guns N' Roses's Appetite for Destruction.

Scholz was also one of the first to incorporate drop-D into hard rock bass.

For example, he lands a fat low D to close out the lead section of "More Than A Feeling". I think "Amanda", among other songs, was also done in drop-D.

I thought Thriller was the best selling album in the U.S.

The first 2 Boston albums were genius, the third and after not so much. I was actually angry after listening to Third Stage.

It is....Appetite is the #1 selling DEBUT album in U.S. history, with Boston's self-titled debut at #2.

Tom Scholz played almost every bit of music on that album as well as doing most of the mixing from what I understand.

I think that was the demo tape.
They told him his band had a contract based on the demo he made by himself and he said "thank you" and then had to go put together a band.
