If you're referring to his solo spots live, well, they're not even supposed to be some kind of musical genius. He's an entertainer, a rock star. People want to hear that same old licks over and over, that's why he's probably always playing the same things. And I don't blame him, I'd do the same thing too if I were him. He's noticed that he can easily get a positive cheer from the audience doing that. Purpose served, people are entertained and happy. I've never really noticed him shredding every bar full on records..
