This guy reminds me of Tony Royster Jr. on the drums. I hope his contributions to music are more 'musical' than Tony's - after building up some monster talent by the end of his teens, Tony just kind of... kept drumming. He does clinics and has made DVDs and is definitely a success story. But IMO he has yet to do anything that isn't either a clinic or playing with some showoffy band built up around him... Ok, I guess he's touring with Jay-Z...

Hope Brandon Rose manages to really find a creative voice and make some MUSIC!

That said, Brandon is a very good player. I don't think he is a genius, but he is a very young child, and he might just find a really brilliant and unique voice on the bass if he keeps playing.

Frankly, I could see him continuing and being an excellent bassist by the time he is in his teens, but I could imagine that he might want to get into other things as he matures.

Either way, I think he will be fine with such a supportive family.
His father forces him on other players.
I've been sitting playing at Low Down Sound (when it was still open) and they would walk in.
His dad, and I'm NOT kidding, would tell him, "move closer", "ask to play his bass" and things like that.
One time, kinda fed up with it I asked his dad for a $3000 deposit before I handed my Sadowsky over to a 10 year old. All of a sudden I was a bad guy.....
Got to the point to where it was flat out annoying.
Forcing the kid on everyone. He did it at clinics. Did it to a bunch of players.
He would walk in and just spit out the latest MM licks and really, nothing of anything beyond that. Just a little machine.
He would play and then immediately look to his dad for approval.
And when he would flub something, I've seen his dad get into him about it.
Kinda pissed me off.

That being said, if he could get out arms reach of his father (who is almost Joe Jackson like, but without the beatings I assume!) he could be a wonderful player.

If he was 22 and playing like that though, he would be written off as just another MM clone/style of player.
But just like the Tal Wilkenfeld threads, a big deal is made because of a girl, a big deal is made from his age.
And it should be to be honest. That's amazing that such a small kid can man handle a full scale bass with that technique.

He's a great kid.
Lets hope he develops into something unique. Otherwise for now we have a VERY young MM clone.
I think he's about 13-14 now?

Im happy for this kid, im 20, and he definitely been playing longer than me. Whats good about it is that he got support from his parents, good gears, having freedom to do what he wants (at least) and meet his heroes.

I got to agree with the fact that this kid plays all mm songs, im a damn huge marcus miller fan myself, and looking at someone who's almost half my age playing mm songs drove me crazy! The "nothing anything beyond that" will dissapear by itself when he plays in a band and such. I'm sure of it.

And regarding the post above, id feel sorry for what his dad did to him. Maybe he just want to show people how talented his kid is. I'm not a dad yet, but i can understand abit.

I'm not jealous of his ability but man, you gotta go through a truck load of Fender 5'ers before you find one with a B string that rings like that...
