Burke Shelley of "Budgie" (with sample track)

Anybody else into this band and this guy's playing? He's really good at that classic rock sort of vibe, with a superb sounding growl-and-grunt tone that cuts through like crazy.

Here's a sample to whet your appetite if you haven't heard anything by the band before.

I love Budgie. Always thought they were a huge and under celebrated influence on NWOHM. Crash Course is a top notch song and I dug his simple but always authoritative playing, more McCartney-influenced than most metal bassists.

Budgie - Fantastic.
Lucky for me they tend to tour the UK every year!
They have some of the best riffs ever IMHO, and a real ramshackle, jam vibe that works entirely in their favour.

Bit of a sad story this - A Mate owns an Iron Maiden box set, which contains all their B-sides and covers, one of which is Budgie's 'In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand' (they had great titiles too).
Now, in the sleeve notes, there is some gushing praise for each band they covered, for their influence etc. When it gets to Budgie, it doesn't even name them - just says 'a band from Birmingham'.

And they are from Wales!

Shame on Steve Harris for letting this one slip. Considering the fiddly bass bit in 'Phantom of the Opera' was pinched from Burke...

I was a Budgie fan in my youth back in the 70's. Great band indeed!
I don't know why they didn't catch on in the U.S. as they were as good
any other heavy British band of the era. I'm glad they are still rocking, and
thanks for the post and link.

I raise a glass to Burke & all the Budgie goodness he created for me! Such genius & so ahead of their time. Bands like Metallica should send 10 percent of all of their royalty checks to Budgie Inc.

First concert I ever saw was Budgie on the Impeckable tour. 30 years later I still love them!

Great album covers too, some by Roger Dean of Yes fame.

+1 for Parents (especially with the lead-in intro-sounding tune "Riding My Nightmare")

I had a college roomie who turned me onto Budgie 25+ years ago. Most folks had never heard of them....many still haven't. An extra plus for me (a massive Yes fan) is the Roger Dean artwork on the early covers...I've got 'em all now!

Metallica did a nice remake of Breadfan.

So, what was his setup. Not that I could afford it, I just wonder how I would go about getting (to me) the ideal ROCK bass setup.

It's probably DI in the studio and live. I seem to remember Marshall and Ampeg on stage when I saw them in the '70's.
