The band Cake... I love these guys. I can listen to each and every song of theirs.. i just like them all.

Who has been their bassist .. and what albums did they play/tour on?

And who is their current bassist?

I really like all their bass lines.. some are simpler.. hell all of them are simple... but they're unique in a way I've never heard a lot.

I knew Gabriel Nelson has been the bassist for a while .. has their ever been one before? I've seen Venton(Victor) Dadimento or something before somewhere...

I'm not sure if he's been there that long....although he is very good.

I'll try and find some of the cd jackets and see who's on the credits (if someone doesn't post it before hand).

Their first bassist was Victor Damiani, who was with them up until after Fashion Nugget was released.

Wow, I totally forgot about these guys. I have all their CD's, but I haven't listened to them for years.

They're good

My band covers Cake's version of I Will Survive at each show. I love playing that bass line!

I will survive is such a cool bass line.

I also enjoy She'll Come Back To Me ... some really cool stuff.

But, one reason i love this band so much, while you can hear all parts .. they're not too damned loud and distorted. They're turned down some, playing with a non-electric sound I guess. It's just, really easy to listen to and enjoy. while I love my wanker guitars with insane distortion that covers up the bass once in a while .. I really prefer Cake.

I'm glad more people like them. I felt like the only one who knew them.

I was listening to them in my truck today, and they ahve a great sound, really. Everything has it's place in the mix, and nobody steps on anyone else's toes. And they all really know how to play very tasty stuff!

I showed Cake to a trombonist friend of mine who I was playing in a Jazz combo with ( just me on bass(sometimes bass trombone) and him on trombone) .. and i showed it to a guitarist friend of mine(he's not a wanker either .. he's cool )

i think the three of us are going to set up a cake-like sounding group. maybe a drum and keyboardist as well.

One of my favorite bands along with dream theater and reel big fish.

He has an amazingly fat tone.

It sounds like he has his picks up with out much treble or mid boost .. so it's just full and bassy. Amazing sound. Especially in my dad's truck .. with a big ol' thumper bass in it.

Was Victor on a P bass?

Also, doesn't Gabe rock the P Bass?

It's really surprising how a bass in a band setting can sound when everyone turns down and plays "relaxed" and audible.. not deafening.

Great band, great basslines. Seems like whatever bass player they use they all use the same bass setup and probably flatwound strings from the sound of it.

Loved playing "the distance" when we did it in a cover band I was with in the 90s...

I have all their recordings, buy them as soon as they come out.

Cake is high up there on my list of favorite bands and they put on a really fun live show.

Bass is one of the aspects of the band I love the most. Like you guys stated above, the tone is just what I am trying to get, and the lines are always tasty. Never over done, always catching just the right notes and adding just the right subtle funky flavor to increase assshakability quotients.

Big influence on where I'd like to be as a bassist.
