I played their version of I will survive not too long ago, complte with trumpet solo.
I really like you turn the screws, guitar man, never their, and the distance the most. Great songwriters, very unique sound and I'm sure they could fit in anywhere. |

my dad loved them the first time he heard them .. tho he's not a musician .. but he use to listen to Chicago, Beatles and other older bands.

I saw them around 8-9 years ago in Fresno, CA - The "Going the Distance" single had recently been released. They were opening for No Doubt, and nobody in the audience cared to hear what else Cake had to play. They were booed off the stage after 4 songs, if I recall correctly. |

That's like booing Jesus off the stage so Satan can come out.
[this is not a religious statement .. more so a joint of good vs. bad .. and no doubt isn't bad .. just maybe not as good as Cake? ]

I'd try and name him, but the turnover rate for musicians seems to be ridiculous in the band, and I've probably missed two or three since I saw them last summer. |

"The original lineup of Cake also featured guitarist Greg Brown, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, bassist Sean McFessel, and drummer Frank French; McFessel soon left to attend college, and was replaced by Gabe Nelson. In 1993, the band released their debut single, "Rock ‘n' Roll Lifestyle," on a local basis, and followed it with a self-produced, self-released, self-distributed album, Motorcade of Generosity. Motorcade found its way to the revived Capricorn label, which released the album nationally after Cake signed a contract with them. With the prospect of extensive national touring, both Gabe Nelson and Frank French left the band, and were replaced by bassist Victor Damiani and drummer Todd Roper...."
"In 1997, Greg Brown and Victor Damiani both left Cake and formed a new group, the new wave-influenced Deathray, which eventually released its debut album on Capricorn in 2000. Meanwhile, McCrea briefly considered putting Cake to rest, but brought original bassist Gabe Nelson back to replace Damiani..." |

What's interesting to me, and I've heard people say it before, is that Cake's overall sound hasn't changed drastically with so many personell changes There is a definite sound and feel that remains with the band as musicians come and go.
I hesitate to comment on McCrea's effect on the above, as one of my earlier influences on bass was either Diamani or Nelson, but I do know that he writes the best lyrics I've ever seen (heard? read?)
Jared
P.S. Eh, come to think of it, I guess I sorta consider them one of those bands that has a signature sound but a definite evolution throughout their discography (think Jamiroquai)
