Anyone here like the band Cake? I know the bassist plays p and j basses, but does it sound like he's using flats or just rolling of the treble alot? Hard for me to tell.

There's are article on Gabriel Nelson in the October issue of Bass Player.
Uses GK 800 RB & Ampeg 4x10, highs rolled off.
Plays Fender Basses. Most likely cheap strings as well.

Whatever his method, I really like the tone, or lack thereof, that he has. Nice and deep with good rumble...

Wasn't their bassist named something like Damiani or something like that?

In 1997, Victor Damiani left Cake, and has been taken over by their 2nd bassist, Gabe Nelson.

I dig the sound. Easy to replicate for me, just take the highs off enough. Simple, and fun groovy songs. Now if I could just convince my band to play some of em...but we lack horns...oh well.

Always enjoy playing their version of "I will survive". Great song to play as you like, and easy to nail if you want to play it thier way.

I like Cake, the bass is good, very very groovy, simple melodies but stucks in your head, very hummable, ehheheh

example from Long Jacket/Short Skirt: Nananananananananannanananana

Or something like that.
