CALVIN TURNER/MARC BROUSSARD BASSIST

Saw this concert on Direct TV and I was seriously impressed with his playing. He is what I would call a very mature player but he found a way to incorporate tasty licks into his ever present groove and all while letting the vocal melodies shine through. His tone KILLIN' to say the least, looked like a vintage jazz and an Ampeg stack with some kind of DI on top of the SVT. Anybody else hear of this guy before or see this concert? He is a monster for sure. I know he has a Nordy VJ5that he recently got...saw it on the Nordstrand site..

This last Summer I opened up for Marc/Calvin at VA/Hi Summerfest. Calvin wanted to see my Nordy and we hung out in the tourbus before his set, talking about bass, music and life on the road. For a cat that is in his early 20's, he is way more mature and has the greatest outlook on being a professional musician and side man.

He actually mentioned that there was something that his Nordy was missing and it hasn't made it out to a gig in a little while. He was playing a '62 sherwood green Fender Jazz, that had tre mojo!

Well, I know I'm late to this party, but I just caught that Marc Broussard concert on DirecTV. You guys are right. Calvin Turner can GROOVE! Very tasteful and impressive at the same time.

Also check out his work with Dave Barnes. I think he's the main bassist on "Chasing Mississippi" and definitely has quite a few tracks on "Me and You and the World."

http://www.davebarnes.com/ <--- Click the music player to "Someday".

Calvin Turner is way, way at the top portion of my list for cats to woodshed to. Just incredible taste. I can't say enough good things about the guy.

I know Calvin personally. His family goes to my church here in New Orleans. I was searching his name on google to see if anything popped up about his music. I think it's cool that you guys know who he is from his playing with Marc Broussard. He is also an amazing drummer.

And a great guitarist, and he can sing, and...

I would love to ask him about some of the gear he uses, his influences, his approach, etc. Some of the approach I now take in following the melody line of the song stems from his expressions.

Matt

I saw some video of Marc Broussard a few years ago when he was playing in SXSW and really liked his music but was immediately drawn to Calvin and his perfect lines and playing. One of my current favorite bass players and the only downside is there isn't enough material for me to listen to quite yet.

He is on my myspace list lol. i gotta send him a link to this thread! this is really cool man. it's like he is famous. I didn't even know he was playing with Marc untill I saw Marc open up for the NBA allstar game last year. The game was held at the New Orleans arena and I was like wait! That's Calvin playing! Then I saw Marcs direct TV concert series gig. Calvin is a lot older than me though

That is killer tune, Dave and Calvin are very talented!

On a side note, a new friend of mine (met recently in Nashville) and long time bassist for early John Mayer, Matt Mangano is playing/touring with Dave Barnes these days.

J,

I've seen him play with Dave twice now, this last time when he opened for Jonny Lang in Houston. Matt's right arm or wrist was broken and was still grooving through! Props to that man. Tell him I said so. I just added him on Facebook. Haha.

Just saw Marc Broussard last night at HOB Houston. Though the sound guy had no idea what he was doing, you just couldn't dismiss how great Calvin was.

Jordan, if you want to help a brother out and direct me his way, that would be amazing.

Its an amazing concert isn't it? Really gets the crowd going. Was he playing that Nordy bass?

Yup. He's played it every time I've seen them. Eden rig top to bottom. WP100 Navigator to WT1250 to (2) D212XLT.

Edit: And I think he's added an envelope filter for some of their funk covers.

I saw him in Houston with Marc Broussard as well as HOB Dallas the next day. That man can play bass. And to think he co-produced Marc's CD at such a young age.. he's incredible!

Just caught Marc Broussard here in Littleton (Denver suburb) this past Saturday night. I can't believe how solid and groovy Calvin is. For me, he's the #1 reason to go to Marc's shows, but the whole band is killer too. Marc said on stage that it was that particular drummer's 2nd time playing with them. High energy show, kept people movin'.

He was rocking the Nordstrand with an Eden rig. I caught them in L.A. at the end of August and he was using a Fender FMT 5'e.r I'm going again at the end of the month when they're in Boulder or Ft. Collins.

I saw Calvin play with marc back in September. Tasteful, Tasteful, Tasteful. He really knows how to serve the song. He was playing through the same eden rig that many of you listed above, but he was rockin' an old yamaha bb5000a. I expected to see him with a Nordy, but he made that yamaha sound like gold. Can't wait to see him again on the Cayamo Cruise in march.

I know, it was crazy! It was at the Toad Tavern. He's not likely to play that small of a venue in town for a long time... Not sure if it was sold out though.
