Absolutely!! Iron Maiden comes to mind immediately. A good friend of mine cites Steve Harris as one of his key influences. I never really noticed his work because I'm so repulsed by the vocals of Bruce(aka "Air Raid Siren"). Recently, a local station played a "block" of Maiden, and I did my best to block out Bruce (no easy task), and focus in on Steve (the bass boost in my stereo helped). There's no doubt, the man can play! I can site other instances as well, but that one really stands out

Can you like the bassist but not the band?

Sure. I've played in a couple of such bands...

Not many people did more for metal bass than Cliff Burton and Steve Harris. Of course, Lemmy is the man, and Geezer is excellent, but those two just REALLY make me listen to their lines.

IMO, it's perfectly easy to like the player, but dislike the band. For instance, I love Geddy's playing, but I don't like Rush (especially Geddy's voice........)

And the other way round, like the band, don't like the bassist, I find is far more common. Like with Mansun, the overall sound of the band is fantastic, but the bassist isn't up to much.

I guess i didn't phrase my thoughts properly. I feel it's difficult to objectively evaluate the bassist apart from their context--i.e. their band. In other words, if you don't like the band, you are unlikely to think much of the bassist. I gave as examples: Rush(can't stand them) therefore I don't think much of geddy Lee; ditto w/ RHCP/Flea.

No, absolutely not. And it's my duty to inform you that if you continue such behavior you could face serious fines or even jail time.

Now, I'm confused... Do YOU see that same post somewhere else on this thread??
I attempted to post something to that effect I think yesterday, got some error message after hitting "submit reply" and was pretty sure it didn't go through.... Came back today, saw the thread was still hoppin', but didn't see my post anywhere and thought I'd try again... Then I see your response so I look over the thread again and still don't see it anywhere...
Am I on crack or is that not what you meant??
