For fans of Carol Kaye: http://lostandsound.wordpress.com/20...nd-carol-kaye/
There's a clip of her playing "I was made to love her" by Stevie Wonder, which was always disputed as being James Jamerson's playing bass on the recording.
If you've never heard of her check out her website. You'll be surprised of how many recordings she plays bass on from the 60's: www.carolkaye.com
Does anyone own any of her books or DVD's?
Ara

Please find the Beach Boys version of IWMTLH and you will get a better idea of how Kaye sounded in the late 1960's trying to play that line. LOL |

I especially liked the little clip of her playing with Brian Wilson. Neat stuff!

The producer of the song claims it's Carol Kaye. Both bass players are greats in my book, so I suppose it really doesn't matter all that much.

She is also one hell of jazz guitarist (6 string). This NPR radio interview is also a blast to listen to. Please check it out. http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/...0616.kaye.html

Ara | You've got your facts wrong. The producer, songwriters and musicians involved have always claimed it was Jamerson. |

Ara | Not true! The Producer of the 1967 Motown record was Henry "Hank" Cosby and there is an affidavit stating that James Jamerson played bass on the record that he produced and co-wrote with Sylvia Moy here: http://bassland.net/hc1.htm
You must be thinking of Brian Wilson who produced the Beach Boy's version of that song the same year.
Er... See post above LOL |

Imagine if Jamerson and Kaye conceived a child together.

Your statement is just false and I look forward to your showing any proof of the validity of said statement at all. |

| | | | good video, thanks for posting. i have a question though.
the groove at 7:39 - what style would you classify that as? what kind of groove is that? i listen to a lot of phish and jam band stuff, that reminds me of some of Mike Gordon's work
Thoughts? |

The only thing that irritated me about the video was the guy saying that Motown tried to deny that whites were on their records. I honestly cannot say that I know every comment that every person associated with Motown ever said about who played on their records, but as far back as when I was in junior high ( a very long time ago ) I knew about people like Denis Coffey (white) who played for Motown.

However, that doesn't take away from Carol's contribution to popular music, and bass playing.

Joe Messina was an original Funk Brother.

Jamerson vs Kaye
Any other beaten to death and dragged through the mud topics we can take on here?
Both bassists had impact on the musical world. It is
unfortunately true that who played on what in the 60's
and 70's was poorly documented.
There are claims, affirmations, affidavits and assertions
from all sides here. Examine the evidence for yourself and draw
your own conclusions. I know I have.
This will never have a definitive answer, beating the horse again is useless.

This will never have a definitive answer, beating the horse again is useless. | Unfortunately Kaye is responsible for this with the outrageous claims in the first place. BTW I agree that it keeps on coming up starting in this instance with a so called documentary claiming she played on IWMTLH. When we stop hearing those outrageous claims, I'll bet this topic quickly disappears. What do you think? |

| | | Bob-
I'm still smarting from that e-mail a Kaye minion sent me ("Batacumbele") a few years ago when this topic was still new here at Talk Bass.
Yep, she called me "...the evil white male that the girls talked about in the Ladies Room".
LMAO.
