Cases in which the bassist makes the band

Sign in to disble this ad
List cases where a bassist clearly makes a band work and without this specific bassist the band would go or has gone down hill.

My example is Matt Sharp from Weezer. The Blue Album and Pinkerton were both fantastic albums, but after Sharp left the band went in the tank musically.

you should get the red one that came out a couple years ago....it's really fantastic, easily the bands 3rd best album.

I don't think you understand the thread. I agree that all bands need a bass player, but I'm asking about specific instances where a particular bass players style contributed so much that their absence causes the music to suffer.

CLARIFICATION: well, it does have a few stinkers, but some really great as well.

Mike Watt. although, as a caveat, I'll say his choice of bandmates/cowriters is the most important aspect.

That said though,

The Ergs!
Streetlight Manifesto
Majority Rule
The Minutemen
These Arms are Snakes
Young Widows

...a lot of the more punky kinda bands are REALLY made by skilled bassists. That's why i've loved playing pop-punk and power-pop for the past few years; i'm able to really go crazy on stuff while the guitarist sings and just plays power chords.

Rush. But you could make the same argument for Neil Peart's drumming- his absence would change the dynamics considerably.

Paul Turner is a killer bassist.
And Toby Smith and JK, are at least as important as SZ.

I agree. Paul is a better bassist for that band. Stu killed but Paul is a better fit! He grooves like a mofo!
