I've found a reason to watch American Idol: Casey Abrams. The guy is a bassist and vocalist (the first Idol has ever seen). He's a guy who goes from jazz to rock and other such things in nothing flat. He's taken risks that not very many people in the crowd liked at the time, but in the end proved awesome, especially to me as a musician, and someone who would eat thumbtacks before hearing another crappy pop-artist who sounds just like someone else and auto-tunes in concert. The guy's great, and I think I'm going to buy his record the minute it comes out. It's also awesome that bass is finally at the forefront!!!! YES!!

Anyway, I watched it this year because my new girlfriend loves it. I just lucked out I guess that this is the year with a bass player making it so far. I was sold on Casey since his first performance with the upright. I really can't believe that he is still in the "competition." I wouldn't have given the AI audience that much credit. I hope he stays as long as possible just so I can have a performance to look forward to, since I am going to have to watch with my better half no matter what. |

| | | | Although he WILL NOT win. (these things are always rigged for pop stars in the crap machine of the music industry) He will definitely get noticed and get a record deal with some jazz label or something of the like. I see great potential in this guy.

I wish all the bass players would call and vote for him. He mentioned Esperanza as an influence last night. It was cool. |

I don't care if he plays bass.
It's a singing contest, and his singing is horrible.
This dude has to go. |

He sings like Burt & Ernie, of Sesame Street.
The judges wasted a save on this guy, now they have to live with it. |

| | | Have you noticed his fingering on the upright? It's even worse than his singing!
However, I'd vote for him just because he really breaks the mold on that dreaded show. |

| | | | I have never watched an episode of "American Icehole" and I never will, but I'm always on Talkbass so I couldn't help but check out the thread and the link.
While it is surprising to see someone playing an actual instrument on the national Karaoke festival, there is NO WAY this guy sings anywhere near good enough to win a national singing competition. I can't believe he's even top ten material. He's OK.

| | | The guy's not incredible when compared with Marcus Miller, Paul Chambers, or Geddy Lee, but he IS at least a good bassist, and a decent vocalist. And what matters more is that he is more concerned with keeping his own creative spin on stuff (even if it doesn't always work) than he is about the 15 year old girls out there who vote for a guy because he looks and sings like a re-run of the Backstreet Boys. He is in it for "art as expression, not as market campaigns".
THAT is why I like Casey.

But! I do think it's fantastic he's representing and do enjoy his songs. Though, The Esperanza comment probably just cost him all the little Beiber fans votes... |
