Approximately 8 strings. Check out his "Right Now Live" DVD. Incredible stuff.

I've been following charlie hunter for close to 10 years now. I've seen him live once, have both his dvd's and a bunch of cd's. He's one of my favorite jazz artists--the cat can really groove! his "groundtruther" project is a little too avant garde for me, though. He has a new disc due out in feb. that is supposedly going to be in more of a "rock" vein--should be interesting!

I've seen Charlie several times in the past 10 years or so, most recently being about 2 weeks ago at Yoshi's.

Sounds like he was influenced by Scofield at least a little, does anyone else hear that?

Only thing is, he hasn't been playing the tambourine lately

like Pete, I have been into his playing since summer of '94 and his stuff with Michael Franti as a duo. I have caught plenty of his different groups (TJ Kirk, Duo, Trio, 4et, Pound for Pound...etc.) here in ATL and in Boston in the '90's.

He actually is a very big influence on my chordal playing and comping while other cats are soloing.

His 8 string is tuned with the 3 low strings off of a 4 string (EAD) bass and the high 5 strings of a guitar (adgbe):

Charlie Hunter is definitely one of my heroes. Oakland is one of my favorite grooves.

I used to see him often when he still lived in the Berkeley/Oakland area. I've seen him a bunch at the Elbo Room in San Francisco's Mission District and at Jupiter in Berkeley. This was around 95 I guess, before he moved to NY. He's really gotten popular since then.

I agree, I love the groove in Oakland hehe. The only thing that bothers me about Charlie, is whoever put that little flying saucer between every song on the DVD I have
