Chi Cheng was nothing if not an atypical example of a bass player in what had been called the Nu Metal scene. I got the chance to see him with the Deftones in Miami a little over 10 years ago and it was a great show. And Chi had an awesome groove.
Unfortunately, Chi was not featured on the most recent Deftones album. He suffered a serious brain injury in a car accident a few years ago. To this day he has not fully recovered and has not been able to rejoin the band.

Some of us may think of people like Chi Cheng as "rock stars", but when a tragedy like this strikes the playing field is levelled rather quickly. And when the medical bills start to mount, even the money of a "rock star" may not be enough to deal with the medical challenges.
