Question Chris Squire and Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad

A friend of mine sent me this link of Yes playing "Parallels" without vocal and Chris Squire is playing a Jazz Bass.
As I've never been a huge Yes fan and almost ignorant in Progressive Rock I don't know but never seen CS playing a JB. Rare??

I enjoyed that. There's a fine line between a Jazz and Ric.

No. Though known for his Rick, he regularly whips out the Jazz, A custom triple neck, a Mouradian, a Joe Osborn Signature Lakland, and some kind of Elektra with built in effects. I think he used all of them but the Osborne in the House of Blues CD.

I think his Ric sounds infinitely better than that.

The neck on that Jazz eventually twisted and that bass has since been replaced by a Lakland Bob Glaub. Doesn't own a Lakland Joe Osborn as mentioned above.

He also used a Thunderbird for some of the tracks on The Yes Album.

Don't forget about his Tobias basses that I believe he still brings out on stage.

That's pretty lame of his website to not even mention that the triple-neck is a Wal. Actually it's a copy of the triple-neck Wal, last I heard was that the original Wal triple-neck is on display at some Hard Rock Cafe.

No he didn't. Where did you got that info?

Thunderbird (late sixties non-Reverse IV) was used on "Release, Release" (Tormato) and "Does It Really Happen?" (Drama), probably on "Our Song" (90125) too.

The first recorded track on that Jazz Bass was on "Relayer" and the song was "To Be Over". He probably used it on "Lucky Seven" too, off his solo album "Fish Out Of Water".

He also uses the Jazz on 'Safe(Canon Song)', except for the 8-string Ric parts.
I think that's the Jazz on 'Turn of the Century' too.

Interesting, I didn't know he played a Jazz bass, but then, I have never been a huge Squire fan. I thought he just went between his Rics and that hideous triple neck!

Also "You By My Side" sounds like Jazz so "Fish Out Of Water" might be Squire's most Jazzy album!

There's also a bonus track on the "Drama" remaster called "Go Trough This" which sounds like a Jazz Bass and one song on "Talk" was played using that same Jazz ("Walls" maybe, can't remember).

That's really cool. I've seen another picture of him playing a Jazz. IMO, I think the Ric is his sound. The J didn't sound right.

The Electra is an MPC Outlaw. If it's like mine, it holds two onboard swappable effects modules. His is the only white one I've seen.

I would enjoy Yes twice as much if he used that bass all the time

Wow, depalm. Thanks for posting that link!

I purchased a VHS copy of some of the "Parallels" run-throughs from someone on eBay several years ago. I was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY! I've always loved the "Going For The One" album tremendously, and "Parallels" has to be one of my very favourite Squire-penned Yes tracks. It's fascinating to see the guys work on this track. How they get all the complicated little parts together is amazing, especially without the vocals. (Although Alan might have some kind of guide tracks in his cans.)

I've always loved Squire's non-Ric tracks. He made good use of a Jazz bass on several occasions, as already mentioned in this thread. His work on "Fish Out Of Water" is a great example. But, here on "Parallels", he really digs in and lays down some pretty quasi-funky grooves every once in awhile. A bit out of the ordinary for him, but always a treat to hear.

Amazing! Squire is always so deep in the pocket and never comes out. The Ric is still my fave though. Thanks for the link!

I hate to admit it as a Ric man who was inspired by Chris' usual tone...

In its way, his jazz sounds almost as sweet as his ricky.
