Chuck does have a band that played out quite a bit the last few years, mostly in Texas. | Wow! let us know when it's available. I've transcribed a bunch of his lines myself. My absolute favorite player. Some of my favorite work of his is with Quincy Jones - Smackwater Jack!
I had the opportunity to take a lesson with the man a few years ago when I was just picking up the bass again after 25 years off. A true gentleman. What he imparted still resonates on a daily basis. |

Also I remember the "Chuck Rainey Complete Electric Bass Method" books. I didn't work all the way through them, but they had some very useful tips. He did a few columns for Guitar Player Magazine - see pages 36-38 that explored his innovative techniques. |

| | | Here's one off the beaten track:
Rainey with Larry Coryell and Billy Cobham backing the Native American jazz tenor saxophonist Jim Pepper on his treatment of a traditional chant, "Witchitai-to" (from 1971). I've always loved the melody and Pepper's solo is spinechilling-- to me, at least. Jim Pepper Witchitai-to - YouTube
And, because it's been mentioned a couple of times, here's Rainey on Aretha's version of Stevie Wonder's "Until You Come Back to Me." Both Aretha and Rainey are absolutely spectacular on this one. Aretha Franklin - Until You Come Back To Me - YouTube |

It seems the guys from Xotic Guitars did the interviews and they are very well done. There are 5 in this series and here is the link to the first one. This one features him doing a new track in the studio. The other 4 are interviews and he gets in depth. The other 4 come up in the sidebar on Youtube. Chuck Rainey Interview
Enjoy. |

He's a encyclopedia of those that have gone before...giving him insight to work his magic as only he can do. I use the word 'artist' very sparingly, but he's at the top of my list of bassists deserving of that type of iconic distinction. Add to all that he's extremely normal and gracious (listening Jeff B.?) when in the company of others. I've spoken with him and exchanged a few emails. It remains an honor to experience, in any form, the command of and love of music he and only a few bass brothers possess.

I think the idea of a book of his basslines would be sweet, I'd pick it up most definitely. Is it whole songs, or just signature basslines?
