Cirque Du Soleil - Varekai

I had the good fortune to see this show here in Brisbane last week. The show itself was pretty cool but the bass player was amazing. Does anyone know who has the current gig with Cirque Du Soleil? (Yes, there was a live bassist - not carrying a keyboard )
The guys tone and technique was as good as I have heard for a long time. So obviously, I'd like to know -

a) Who he is.
b) What gear he was using. The bass looked a bit like a Warrior.

And to think I just went to the show to keep my wife happy

Good thread. I'm curious about this too. Saw "O" a year or so back and they also had a live bassist. Ripped. Flat out. You don't get to be that good without being a notable name already. I haven't heard anything about who these guys are. Anyone know? I figure they're union dudes. Most everyone else in Vegas is.

There's also gonna be more than one version of the show on tour at any time, right?

I caught the Orlando show years ago, and could see the musicians in a tower above the stage and seating: from what I could tell, there were two people, one who played bass and guitar at different times, another stayed seated at a keyboard all night.

Ok. My first bit of Googling has unearthed a name -

Buddy Mohmed

I'm not sure if this is the bassist who is in Australia. Anyone know of this guy? I have been told that the entire band is US/Canada based.

I also found a picture of an unidentified player using a beautiful 5 string fretless Fodera - which would explain the quality of tone!

hmmm ... When the Mrs. and I saw Varekai when it came to Dallas we were center stage right behind the board. And, we could see all the musicans all the time. There was not a Fodera to be seen. The Bassist was playing a product of Canada

Also, the bassist is a Canadian by the name of Richard Drouin

Thats the guy!

I must have been compiling info from bassists playing other shows around the world. Blame google and my lack of information filtration

Thank you very much. (And a very fine Canadian bass builder deserves my apologies)

I seem to recall him selling a fretless Wal bass a while back, I think it was the same guy.

I believe Buddy is from Texas and he played a Kubicki Key Factor 5.

I don't know any of the bass player's names, but the music is always a huge part of the show. I'm looking forward to seeing Corteo here in Atlanta in January '07.

One of my teacher got to see the setup for the band, sounds cool. Being a live show anything can happen, entertainer out sick or hurt, something screw up. Anyone who has done stage shows, knows what I mean. Cirque Du Soleil has wides LCD screens that the music comes up on, so they can see a couple pages at a time. The MD can edits the tunes and arrangement before the show. During the show if a change comes through he can punch it in and the whole bands charts they see are updated. I hear some other big shows are starting to use LCD music stands.

I've seen the Vegas shows a few times each. It is a dream of mine to play in 'O' or 'Ka'. I would love to be part of something so huge.
