Cliff Burton: 25th anniversary of his death...

Sign in to disble this ad
Before I hit the road, I thought I should put this up as I was reminded of the date when I first got up. This morning close around this time (or more accurately, around 11:30 Central time last night...) one talented and brilliant musician and man passed away 25 years ago. I know he is the subject of much debate on many threads here on TalkBass, but I think this is a good opportunity to just simply pay respects to a fellow brother on bass long gone.

Clifford Lee Burton, always a great and continuing inspiration for me on bass, Rest in Peace and God Bless...

You should listen to this: Cliff Burton Tribute - Bass solo (To live is to die) - YouTube
It almost makes me cry.

Ars longa...

25 years?! For me, he was THE Metall in ica. My buddy told me: "Hey, you like Deep Purple, Zeppelin and the more, you should listen to this..."
"Kill em All" the first time. And then there was this bass solo. Great artist. Good times.

Absolutely agree. Huge influence on me for even taking up bass in the first place, and one of many talents taken way too soon. RIP, Cliff.

I am a bay area thrasher myself and Cliff was the reason why I became a bassist. I am the same age as he was when he died. Truly amazing how much he did at such a yound age. Truly unique and timeless, a true god amongst gods. Us bay area thrashers have been celebrating his life all day and will be into the night.

R.I.P Cliff

This ones for you!!! *raises beer up high*

This thread did not receive a lot of loving. R.I.P. Cliff, you need to give Metallica a visit and let them know what is really up. I suggest bringing a keg or two.

Happy Birthday Genericusername! You share a Bday with one of my very good friends!

hmmmm that's why James remembered Cliff after they played Orion at Yankee Stadium a couple weeks ago. Hard to believe it's been 25 yrs.

Not my first influence (ironically, Newsted was). But I certainly went through a "Cliff phase". Although he gets a lot of flack here, think about this: he made three albums, over twenty-five years ago....and we STILL talk about him nearly daily here. I can think of only a handful of other bassists who fit that mold. RIP brother - you ARE missed.
