do you think if he was alive today, he could've become the best metal bassist?

There would not be a Black album and Metallica would not be nearly as big.
But he would still be amazing.

Today, there are so many people doing so many experimental things with bass, he wouldn't stand out as much, but what do I know.

| | | | I'm not a fan of Metal, but from what I've heard, I appreciate what he did as a bassist. I also think that he was a much better player then Newsted is IMO.

Newsted owned Burton on tone -- technique, hard to say. |

But others say they can hear him fine, so probably just me. |

You have to take that album out of the equation altogether because Newsted was intentionally mixed out of that record and Hetfield and Ulrich have acknowledged that as fact. Maybe someday after those two are dead and gone someone will remix that record so it sounds like it should have in the first place. |

That album is full of Cliff Burton legacy.
On the Black Album they threw that all away. |
