do you think if he was alive today, he could've become the best metal bassist?

No.

There would not be a Black album and Metallica would not be nearly as big.

But he would still be amazing.

He isn't alive today and he is still the best metal bassist, IMO.

Man, he really wasn't anything but an innovator. I personally didn't think he was AMAZING, but he surely had some fresh ideas and was on the top of his game at the time.

Today, there are so many people doing so many experimental things with bass, he wouldn't stand out as much, but what do I know.

I'm not a fan of Metal, but from what I've heard, I appreciate what he did as a bassist. I also think that he was a much better player then Newsted is IMO.

I would want to hear some recorded tracks by both of them in isolation before I made a call on that.

Newsted owned Burton on tone -- technique, hard to say.

Tone wise, Yes I agree with you. And although Burtons technique wasn't say outstanding, I think that it was better than Newsteds. Certainly not taking anything away from either of them.

Reason I said "in isolation" is cause I personally have always had a very time hearing what Cliff is doing on the Metallica records.

But others say they can hear him fine, so probably just me.

Yeah I was waiting for that. You have to take that album out of the equation altogether because Newsted was intentionally mixed out of that record and Hetfield and Ulrich have acknowledged that as fact. Maybe someday after those two are dead and gone someone will remix that record so it sounds like it should have in the first place.

Correct.

That album is full of Cliff Burton legacy.
On the Black Album they threw that all away.

I have a problem with calling any musician the "best" tbh, it's pointless and subjective all at the same time.

+1 I agree I just prefer Burton's tone, that's just me.
