Burton did indeed have a fairly percussive finger attack, and did often slap the strings especially live.

On solos he used a distortion box, his ensemble tone is basically just a tube amp turned up really high, generating a lot of growl.

From what I've learned about em when he solo'd and on a few songs, and figured out on my own, its a few things.

He did play hard, with alot of distortion, and a morley wah pedal. That'll give you something close to his sound, you just have to play around with the distortion and your rigs EQ's til you get it close enough.

I got some more things written down, but my notes aren't around. Theres a good amount of info out there on the google machine, just takes some searching.

I think a lot of his growl had to do with the Rickenbacker he used

And his amp as well. The first day I hooked my D-180 up and played through it, I was fiddling around with the settings and managed to get, basically by accident, the exact tone Burton had on live recordings I've heard of him from 85-86, and very similar to the tones from Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. It was interesting. That's not the tone I use, but it's a cool one.
