Ok this is the Battery bass track, its all new to me but my god that is very sloppy playing from Burton, but I love the tone of the Rickenbacker
When Guitar Hero Metallica is out and the tracks are youtubed that is going to answer alot of questions with regard to some or even most of Burtons playing, but damn that Battery track is sloppy, nice tone from the Rickenbacker though.
I hope something like Damage Inc or Fight Fire With Fire is on there.
Thoughts?
Rob : I wanna play Battery
Kirk : You can play that fast with your fingers?
Rob : ..Yeahhhhhhh

Rob was fun to watch and listen to on stage, but I can't bring my head around why so many people idolize Cliff Burton. |

A lot of people seem to get blinded by the fact that he did some cool guitar shredding style solo-y stuff, and headbanged like a mofo.

and thrash metal isnt about being sterile accurate and having perfect technique, it was about tearing **** to pieces
so for his genre and the drummer he was dealt, i dont think anyone could have done much better.

That just speculation though =/

I don't know, man...my band usually records "live" in the studio. I've listened back in horror to some of my bass tracks by themselves while recording some of our earlier stuff but once everything else was mixed in there, they always sound pretty damn good.

Especially with most Metal stuff, there doesn't need to be a lot of intricacy, or super clean playing for it to work well in the mix. Cliffs playing may have been sloppy when you solo it out, but it's perfect in the mix. Master of Puppets as a whole is still a masterpiece, with some sweet basslines

I saw Metallica live at L'Amour in B'klyn on the RTL tour and they were amazing. OK, Cliff may not have been the most precise player but NO One has touched his playing since. Just like no one has touched Jimmy or Stevie since their passing.
Cliff was and still is a viable talent...unfortunately he was killed at age 24. Who knows what kind of damage he would've unleashed on the bass community had he not been snuffed out so soon.
It's unfortunate that such a gifted person who spearheaded a totally valid form of music and was a part of one of the most important "metal" bands in history would leave us too soon to realize the fruits of his labor.
Secondly: from reputable industry insiders I know Lars is sloppy as ****. Here's the methodlogy:
1.Click is laid down.
2.Drums and scratch guits are laid down.
3.Guits are corrected to the drumming to compensate. (after many botched takes)
4.Everything else is laid down.
5.Platinum record/extensive touring ensues.
Yeah, yeah, yeah...someone will riff about how great they are live...that has to do with the fact that Lars has James pumped directly to him in the monitors and NOTHING ELSE. It's live and adjustments are made. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Lars...but I've seen them enough to know what's up. ****...I have the original "No Life "till Leather" demo I got when I was 12 from Zig Zag records from the guy who said: "You like all that import ****...you'll like this garbage." How do you like your crow served, Sir.
Natch!
Dat's all...

And I don't see how you can think of Cliff as being more awesome than Rob or Jason based on the music that he played at the time. Rob played with Ozzy (slightly awesome ). And Jason was playing plenty of heavy stuff before and after Metallica. Flotsam, Voivod, Sepultura, Ozzy, IR8...etc. Jason also played on AJFA; that was pretty good metal, right?
Do you give Rob and Jason less credibility just because they've played music that isn't super heavy, or classic thrash? Cliff listened to classical music. Does that make him less awesome?

rob is a great player.. but i think hes a little weird for metallica. chances are we'll never hear him shine because hes buried behind a wall of suck. cliff was great at putting fun little bits in when he could. now all that space is taken up.
listen to the 4 horsemen, and try to catch all the cool little bass moves in there. you couldnt stick that in new metallica songs.
