I'm sure there is another thread on king of the downstrokes Williams.
Great faultless time, occasionally plays these cool little runs, Check out tracks on For Those About To Rock and Highway To Hell. Listen closely however they are easy to miss but they are there.

With Phil Rudd they make one of the best rock rhythm sections. They play what is required.

And interestingly enough when I saw them live, on a couple of tracks he actually switched to fingerstyle (with the pick in the mouth) halfway through the song and then went back to the pick after a particular section. Unfortunately I can't remember which tracks and it was only about twice in the whole show. But hey a bit of Cliff Williams trivia for you.

I read an article on Billy Sheehan in Bass Player Magazine many years ago and one tip that he made for any beginning bass player is to listen to Cliff Williams. If you want to learn timing and tightness with the drummer, Cliff is the best in rock. I took that advice and it defiantly made me a better player.

Akka Dakka are one of my alltime favourite bands. Got me through my angsty adolescent years....
It is an example of a band that is so much like a machine. All the parts working together seemlessly to create the most awesomess ROCK the world has every known!
And certainly Williams and Rudd are the backbone of that machine. His lines might be simple, like Rudd, but just listen to the way they deliver it.
I only wish sometimes the bass was a bit more prominent in the mix. Their stuff is so guitar heavy and the bass sometimes is so low. Mind you, what a guitar sound....

I find that they get the bass mix right. You can always hear Williams. Its obviously the riffs of the Young brothers that make AC/DC the band they are. Its also such a great tone that Williams gets. Mid of course but with just a slight edge but never ever clunky. Smooth all the way.

Solid player that a lot of bassists should take a lesson from. Eerie Von from Danzig is another one, very similar in style.

I'm not anti-wank, but I'm definitely pro-groove so there you go.

yeah, I love Cliff...got to see AC/DC back in the days when Bon Scott was still alive.

Check out their 1st record, which he is not on, then listen to anything after ... it just grooves so much harder!

Straight eighths baby!!

I spent a couple of years in an AC/DC tribute band...when you try to figure out what Cliff is doing, it really teaches you a lot about how the band grooved. Most people don't think about bass when they think AC/DC, which is a shame. Cliff is the ultimate team player and he makes the music move.

Peteroberts, you are very lucky. I would cut off my leg to see AC/DC with Bon.

I envy you.

Cliff's great. I always think the phrase "he gets the job done" is only a slight praise, as if to infer he doesn't play with style, conviction, elegance, and class. He does, and plenty of it as well.

I'm not much of a rock fan anymore, but I still enjoy hearing AC/DC cuts and focusing on what Cliff is doing. There's really a lot more to his playing than eighth notes, but some of the captivating things he does are so simple and so integral to the music that they can be overlooked.

He is a bass playing legend. Rocco is a legend for his style. He cannot solo to save his life. Williams fits the same bill. A player with a style. And you you do need to listen closely because their are some very cool licks and refrains.

Bon Scott ruled.

I do think it's funny there is a Cliff Williams thread every couple of months. I'm always glad to see him get his props.
