Cliff Williams of ACDC taught me how to play bass

OK not personally, but he's who I imitated starting out. He's a bricklayer. He plays the song. He executes profound simplicity, never goes crazy but steers the ship and I respect that. For whatever reason some people don't get behind Michael Anthony or Gene Simmons for what they do (or don't do), but who talks crap about Cliff Williams? Who hates on ACDC? You best do not.

Honorable mentions of simple-playing bassists that I love, whom others hate: Adam Clayton (U2), Colin Greenwood (Radiohead), Paul Denman (Sade), and sometimes, Sting. I like simple. I'm just a caveman.

Ac/Dc is my favorite band, that said Cliff has never done anything flashy. He has written some solid lines. My favorite bass line by him is proly love hungry man.

AC/DC definitely have the best rhythm section in rock, in my opinion. Every song, every album gives you something to tap your foot to and you know what you're getting. For my money, it's tight and consistent...can't beat it.

Interesting that you have Denman in there. Not disagreeing, although Cliff & Paul are, for me, at extreme opposite ends of some kind of *solid/groove* player scale. Love them both, BTW.

In the terms you describe, Tim Commerford from Rage Against the Machine "taught" me to play bass. I figured out the basics from RATM songs.

Cliff Williams IS rock&roll bass! Period!

Paul Denman??? Really? I think of him more as a groover. That's a positive thing.

Cliff is definitely solid. Another honorable mention for a player of simple lines that hold the band and hold every song is Ian Hill from JUDAS PRIEST.

Funny this comes up because AC/DC tunes is basically what I'm playing along with a lot to get a better feel for timing (since the bass lines in general are quite simple.. except maybe love hungry man...).

I love AC/DC. My band plays a bunch of their stuff. It's amazing how easily you can screw it up. Music like this, timing is everything. Play too much, it falls apart. Play too little and somethings missing. It has to be dead on.

Which is why it's good for a noob like me to play along with it and see if I can do it without screwing up

As an aside, I'd like to mention the drummer(AC/DC, sorry don't know his name )'s high-hat work; it seems to pulse- the 1,2,3,4 of an 8-count having slightly more emphasis/volume than the *ands* if that makes sense. Subtle variety.. or perhaps my imagination?

I almost said *Phil Rudd* but hate to bluff- I wasn't the least bit sure. THAT said, I tend to notice good groovin drummers more than bass players. I think I'm more suited to drums- but I think as a bass guy, I have to lug *slightly* less gear..
