Cliff Williams on Black Ice - nice tone

Sign in to disble this ad
As a producer Brenden O'Brien was perfect on this one. This is a very balanced mix, everything in it's place, yet everything seems to stand out on it's own - great, great, great work.

On to the thread title, what do you suppose Cliff used for recording on this one? Stingray with flatrounds? mostly direct signal? primarily mic'd Ampeg?

What do you think of the tone, like it? Hate it?

Personally I think the midrange has a nice texture and the E string has some awesome guts.

I'd all but given up on AC/DC after the most recent albums but this is a great rock album!

Open for discussion on all points!

Brenden O'Brien is behind some of the best sounding records I have ever heard. He did RHCP Blood Sugar Sex Magik and if anyone can find anything wrong with how that record sounds then they are in the wrong business. It just blew me away how you could hear every instrument, with amazing tone, at a nice strong volume yet the whole mix sound good together as well.

I believe he also did an STP record or two and those sound great as well.

I think Rick Rubin and Brendan O'Brien both did the mixing on that one

Brendan O'Brien

Brendan engineered and mixed blood sugar sex magik so he is technically responsible for the way that album sounds. As far as stuff he has produced, you should know that O'Brien is a bass player himself as well as an organ player. He engineered the first two Black Crowes albums and Blood Sugar Sex Magik then became his own engineer, mixer, and engineer. Other classic albums beside RHCP and STP include RATM's "Evil Empire" and "Battle of Los Angeles", Incubus' last two cd's (tasty Ben Kenney tones) and Audioslave's "Revelations." Also Korn's "Issues" and the forthcoming Mastodon album.

Good album. On a trip we stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up the new album. Nice corporate rock for ya! Good for the first few songs than the everything sounds the same. I like Ac/Dc a lot though, they're great in concert.

Yeah, nice album. The bass sounds awesome. I personally think the AC/DC album in which the bass sounds the best (my taste only) is POWERAGE.

I really dig the tone. More than likely it was his pre-ernie ball stingray. The album is very good. And of course it sounds the same! It is rock n roll people.

How dare you! Corporate rock? Journey is corporate rock. Starship is corporate rock. AC/DC is anything but.

I liked your comment about how everything sounds the same, though. AC/DC has made the same album 15 times over, so I'm not surprised. But if everything they did didn't sound the same, they'd suck

You didn't have to delete your post, dude...I was yanking your chain a little. But just the same, as AC/DC is the second greatest rock band in history (next to the Beatles), I appreciate you showing a little respect.
