The thing about Prince is that not only does he play everything, he plays everything so well! If he were just a singer her would be great, he would be a great guitarist, he would be a great bassist, he would be a fine keyboardist, and he would be an excellent drummer. The only other person as versatile is Stevie Wonder. It is no surpise that those two have started to collaborate.

At another level, Prince is even easier to appreciate now that he is no longer at his peak. He has dropped the persona, and now it is much easier to appreciate his actual talent as an artist IMO.

Is that an early Basslabs bass he's playing or is that just one of the many odd bass contraptions to come from the 80's? It sounds good!

You never want to be in the same room with Prince. You can't have any game with him around, he is the coolest.

If anyone here has not had a chance to catch a live show, do yourself a favor...

You guys need to check out the tune "Get On The Boat" from his latest album. I think it says differently in the liner notes, but inside information is that Prince played the bass on that tune. Maybe the funkiest bass line I have heard in the last 10 years!!!

I really have to take issue with people saying only Stevie is as versatile as Prince. There is one man who blows them both out of the water in that department. Roy Wood plays bass like a demon, and is even better at guitar. His skills on drums, cello, oboe, bassoon, harmonica and more are also nothing to sneeze at. He sings at times like a one man Beach Boys and writes music in genres including but not limited to modern classical, reggae, metal, country, pop, progressive rock, glam, jazz and old timey rock and roll. Not to mention he has played sitar on a few records and is one of the most original bagpipers in rock. He founded or co-founded ELO, The Move and Wizzard. Kind of makes me laugh at Prince a little bit (not to mention every other multi-instrumentalist).

I can't get enough of his tune "let's work" I love that bass line. So simple, and so funky.

Dont forget John Paul Jones from Zeppelin. He is prob the most versitile musician. He can play guitar , mondo , basses of all strings , steel guitar , any keyboarded instrument.
Also Hendrix was pretty talented at guitar , bass , and even a bit of drums ( In his early years with Curtis KNight they made and album and Hendrix played all the instruments drums included.

Kind of makes me laugh that I've never heard of him (not that it doesn't make him legit)!

Well, a lot of people haven't heard of him, although his band's had numerous hits in the 60s and 70s. If you want the best examples of his multi-instrumental virtuosity, I recommend his solo (and I do mean solo) albums Boulders and Mustard, plus ELO's first album, although I think his best songwriting is on the first Move album and his best bass playing on the last Move album Message From the Country.
