There is a lot of buzz about Tal Wilkenfeld, Jeff Beck's young bassist on the forums. I will go on record that I love her solo CD, envy her gig, and can't wait to see her live with Jeff, my all-time favorite guitarist. But, this is not the first time that Jeff has "discovered" a great young talent. Today, I revisited the Jeff Beck Group's Rough and Ready and the "Orange" albums. Check out Clive Chaman, an excellent player in the Jamerson/Rainey/Jemmot tradition, playing some of the edgiest rock of the era. I realized today how much of an influence on my playing he was. I lived inside these records for weeks, and still hear a lot of Clive's style in mine, never knowing that this is where it came from. He went on to play in Hummingbird, with some of the Beck Group guy's and then faded away... |

I admit that I like Beck's Rough and Ready, Orange as well as Blow by Blow and Wired mostly for the contributions of the backing band (I am a big fan of Max Middleton, Clive Chaman, Wilbur Bascomb, Cozy Powell and Narada Michael Walden). Check out his playing on a concert of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express at http://www.wolfgangsvault.com, it includes a bass solo too. A pity he got fed up with music business and retired early. |

I don't know what Ronnie was doing before the Jeff Beck group, but that was the first I ever heard of him. Kinda wish he had stuck with bass. |

I'd love to hear Jeff and Tal with a different drummer. Vinnie, of course, is one of the greats. But, his playing with Jeff makes my head hurt a bit... WAY too over the top. I'd love to hear Jeff and Tal with, for example, Steve Jordan. That would be more in the vibe of what Jeff's music is all about to me (like the great, simple, soulful rhythm section on Blow by Blow). IMO! |

| | | | Well, Beck's songs don't do it for me since the Guitar Shop album (and I was a big fan of Bozzio's drumming too, maybe I was expecting too much). When David Sancious joined I was looking forward, as he is also one of my favorite keyboard players and also a great guitarist. But listening to a boot of the Japan tour, he just played the parts that Jason Rebello played before him. Anybody knows the solo albums of Sancious? He had a great drummer and bassplayer too. Now Rebello is with Beck again, Sancious would have been a reason to watch him again. I miss the funk and soul vibe that the earlier members delivered Chaman and Middleton were great at that, as well as Wilbur Bascomb, Bernard Purdie and Narada Michael Walden) |

I saw the original trio that Sancious had over 30 years ago, they smoked!

I think she is pretty tasty. On the Live at Ronnie Scott's CD she is supportive and solid and I wish she stepped out more.
As to Ronnie Wood, in 1970 my group was the opening act on the Faces tour. Being the Jeff Beck freak that I am, it was exciting playing with Ronnie and Rod Stewart at various venues but I missed his bass playing. I think he started out as a guitarist, in a band called the Birds, and we all know his gig after Rod. |

It's in a '70s R&B/Funk/Rock vibe...I think it's Track_3 that reminds me a little of Graham Central Station. The guitarist has a nice Rock feel/tone, Max Middleton is jazzy, Chaman & the drummer are locked solid.
Hummingbird also reminds me a little of Full Moon (Neil Larsen, Buzz Feiten, Brother Gene, Phillip Wilson, & Freddie Beckmeier)...if possible, check out Full Moon's debut album.
Sad, 'cause both of these bands would be a breath of fresh air in today's scene.

Even the thought of Jan Hammer still makes my skin crawl to this day. At any rate, here the good guys are owning this Dylan tune...
