Heard "Mayor of Simpleton" this weekend for the first time in several years. Wow, again, just... wow. So busy and yet so musical. Nice tone too with a Wal bass IIRC.
The one thing I had forgotten about is the uninspired, cheezy sounding drum track (a machine?), which kind of keeps the song from being everything it could be ... but from the bass perspective it is just so right. I've never given bass lessons but if I did, this would definitely be on my student's "must listen" list. There are about 10 lessons in great bass playing right there in that song alone. |

Colin Moulding brought so much to XTC. He influenced me big time. And he made it look so easy!

Absolutely!
A great fluid and melodic track full of energy from a gem of a player.

| Em, that would be former Mr. Mister, now King Crimson drum God Pat Mastelotto.
Yes Colin Moulding is a fantastic player. My San Diego band covered M.O.St., and I got to tell ya, that song is quite a feat to pull off, and extremely fun.... if your fingers don't get tied in knots.

Colin is everything I admire in a Bass Player, to the point, everything in the right place, economical, solid and fuid with it all. Ok so Im looking through rose tinted glasses, XTC are the best pop group that never was, they can do no wrong. Oh and yep he can rip it up where needed. He has the imagination to slip totally off the wall styles into songs that you would never imagine could take it. Him and Terry Chambers - the perfect rhythm section!!
The early stuff is still the best for me.

Great tunes and playing by all members. I do prefer the albums with Dave Mattocks on the traps, as opposed to Pat Mastelotto's contributions. I think Mattocks was a better fit and played more finely crafted parts.
When Black Sea came out is when I started to pay attention to the band and Mr. Mouldings playing.
I was working in a record shop, playing in a band, and attending college at the time. For some reason prior to Black Sea, I never payed them much attention, even though Making Plans for Nigel was played in the shop regularly.
Maybe one day Colin will choose to play with Andy....and Dave Gregory again.
The Fuzzy Warbles Collectors edition box set has a ton of XTC's demos, etc. Mostly, Colin would flesh out and improve Andy's demo's and already recorded bass tracks. |
