A conversation between the working bassists
I am a 40 year old currently playing anywhere from 3 to 5 nights a week. I have made some changes and am considering a few other options. I'm wondering what other working guys are doing.
Let's Get Small -
I have gone to a GK MB200 through a Yamaha BT210 on a stand. I also have taken to using gig bags instead of hard cases. I can throw the head in my musician's bag along with all cables, tuner, pedal, tape, stands (guitar and cab). Throw a bass in a gig bag on my back, my cab in one hand and bag in the other and am in the room in one trip. Set up and tear down is a breeze and I have plenty of volume for on stage and small rooms w/ my trio. If I am playing in a bigger room with my rock cover band, I use a DI to the board and let the subs do all the heavy lifting. I know people complain about their "precious tone," but honestly, my little rig sounds great to me and I'm just trying to make a living and still walk at the end of the week, so if I sacrifice a little tone, I'm totally fine with it. I also am driving my little 4 cylinder pickup truck a lot lately to save as much gas as I can, and the little rig all fits up in the cab with me and the gig bagged basses fit behind the seat, which works great on those rainy spring nights. What's the small rig of choice for the busy guys out there, and how are you becoming more efficient.
Does Weight Matter?
My primary bass is an older 70's P bass. I have it loaded with a Fralin and it sounds awesome, but it's not a super light bass. I recently got a Fender Aerodyne and gigged with it Saturday night. So much lighter! Does anyone sacrifice your favorite player for a lighter substitute? I know my back felt much better after a 4 hour club gig. I won't put my P bass away forever or anything, but I am pretty sure this Aerodyne is gonna get some work just because of it's weight.
