I've just recently been gettin into The Meters old stuff lately and really dig everything about George. He's one funky mofo !

Anyway I know he used a P bass and a telebass (later) but any idea of what kinda rig he might have used ? How bout strings flats or rounds ?

Cool Thanks !

I did a search but somehow this didn't come up or I didn't see it ! Seemed like most of the results were just name dropping.

Check out Bass Player Mag www.bassplayer.com and do a search on George Porter. He was recently interviewed and below is the lowdown on his gear. I agree GPJ is a groovin' SOB. He recently was on Austin City Limits with the New Orleans Social Club (great CD too). Also check out the Deepest End CD/DVD set from Gov't Mule. GPJ along with a slew of great bassist are on the set in a tribute to Allen Woody.

Gear
Bass Fender Precision Bass-1970 Precision body with a circa-1965 Precision neck
Rig Ampeg SVT-4PRO head; Ampeg cabinet-SVT-610HLF (home) or SVT-810E (road); Shure UC14 wireless system; Morley ABY Selector/Combiner; Whirlwind IMP 2 DI; Boss TU-12H Chromatic Tuner
Effects EBS UniChorus, EBS BassIQ envelope filter, EBS OctaBass
Strings D'Addario XL Nickel Round Wound Long Scale (.055, .065, .085, .105)

For the old stuff, dead strings and the tone rolled back. He cranks the treble on the newer stuff..ie, the Funky Meters tunes.

I never realised George was the bass player for the Meters, I only knew him from his session work for Tori Amos. Tori's 'Under The Pink' album has some great understated basslines on it. Les Claypool has been known to throw the odd Meters riff into his live solos.

Which Meters albums would anyone recommend for a Meters newbie to listen to?

"Funkify Your Life" One of my favorite basslines of all time
"Fire on the Bayou" Deep pocket in this one
"Funky Meters Soul"

Those of course are just a sample of what the man can do.

yes all of them...

A serious lesson in groove that I believe that bassist should shed some of his lines to study pocket.

Last year my wife got tickets to see the original line up at the Fillmore, for my birthday (on my birthday!)... it was definitely a great experience.

I bought the "Best of" CD prompted by the FUNK101 thread in recordings. Awesome. Dig that Cissy Strut!
