If I recall correctly, Helplessly Hoping was recorded with just the three voices and either 1 or 2 acoustic guitars, so I don't think it really needs a bass part. If you are going to put a bass part to it, I would keep it very simple. I'm attaching an example of what you might play (note that this is not the complete song, but only one verse and chorus). I did this off the top of my head, so I don't guarantee its accuracy.
