Crust, Grind, and Hardcore bassists

I've been listening to loads of these three genres and a thought came to me, their all loaded with some great bass players. So what are some of your favorite Crust, Grind, and Hardcore bassits? Some of my favorites are Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys, Rob Miller of Amebix, Pete Wright of Crass(i don't think they fall into any of the titled genres but i'm a newb to Punk, so oh well), Scott Carlson of Repulsion, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, Kalvin Piper of Heresy, and bunch of others I can't think of at the moment. Also can someone tell me what makes a band Oi Punk and Street Punk?

Can you tell me what makes a band fall in to the Hardcore, Crust, or Grind genres? I had no idea bands were categorized that specifically. Oi punk and street punk? huh?

Right! I should of wrote a little explaination of each genre. There are people here that can explain this much better than i can, but this should do for now.

Hardcore: Punk played at fast tempos, often simple three chord riffs. Some bands played with more technicality. Bands include: Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Discharge, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains.

Crust: From what I understand, Crust is a mix of Hardcore and Metal bands like Venom and Celtic Frost. Examples: Amebix, Doom, Heresy, and Hellbastard.

Grind: Again from what I've read, its a mix of Crust, Hardcore, and Death Metal. Whether or not this is true, I don't really know. Examples: Napalm Death, Carcass, Repulsion, Agathocles, and early Xysma.

This is probably the worst explanation of all time, I imagine someone will clear all this up in a little while.

well

one thing about this though, when you say hardcore the definition or it now a days is by far different than back in the 80s when true hardcore punk existed (ie suicidal tendencies, dead kennedys)
so that is really not much like any of the other genres you listed.

they're only kinda grind, but

the number 12 looks like you. They have a pretty sick bass player. Although I can only listen to the music for so long.

I just added Hardcore into the genre because I like the 80s stuff and a lot of Grind bands are influenced by the Hardcore bands of the 80s. I get what your saying that modern Hardcore(which from what ive heard sounds nothing like the 80s stuff) is pretty weak. Also, thanks for the recs you guys.

I think Crass, for most people, are considered the founders of crust punk. Seeing as its based more around attitude than style. Anarcho-, Crust and Peace punk, sonically, all sound pretty similar. The difference is generally in the lyrical content and personal outlook of the band (nihilistic, political, posi, etc.) than the actual sound.

Same goes for Oi and Street punk, there's more a difference in audience and lyrics and musical style: Oi is bascially punk rock for skinheads, made by working class kids who shave their heads, wear suspenders (braces), tight jeans and tee-shirts. Street punk is more punk in terms of clothing. Oi bands might try to be a little more tuneful and lean more to traditional rock arrangements, but its more that the people in Oi bands look different from the ones in street punk bands, but they sound very similar.

As far as bands, Milligram had a couple of good bassists; Die Kreuzen are a spectacular band with very talented musicians; if you like Crass you should check out The Ex from the Netherlands, who are just as political, but took a very different path and you can talk about crust without mentioning Rudimentary Peni, and Grant Matthews was pretty solid.

Shane Embury of Napalm Death, just for the fact he plays a Warwick Streamer Stage II but listening to him you could be fooled into thinking he played any given bass!

QFT! Carcass' one of my all-time-favorite bands, too bad they split. I didn't like "Swansong" that much and stayed away from their later band project Black Star Rising.
Jeff Walker and die Flüffers isn't my cup of tea either, it's sorta funny how he tries to sing

I wouldn't call Heresy crust, just realllllly fast hardcore that was basically proto-grind. Their bassist Kalv played fingerstyle, which is really 1) quite impressive given the speed of most of the tunes and 2) for a time when most dudes would just grab a pick straightaway. Currently he's playing in Geriatric Unit. Fingerstyle still, only on a Thunderbird this time. Used to rock a Kramer.

EDIT: Mah bad, you're on top of your game, DoomandHeavy. I'll add that among my prized records is a first-pressing Canadian copy of Face Up to It.
