i would have to name two

1. Dan andrino= mainly for his work with alkaline trio i havnt heard the stuuf he doin with his side project but i think he keeps time relly well and has incredibally good lines and fills he really does help make the song

2. Chris 2= sure anti-flag seem a little cheesey but ive seen em live and there alot fun, he just has good lines as well and i find he drives songs along

thats all i can think of with out thinking besides id like to see what you think

Laugh me off but ...

Mike Dirnt, for his beefy, bad-ass sound of precision bass on american idiot album. Don't like the music, love the sound

its ok that album was good maybe the first two times i heard it but after that i kinda got over it, yea i agree it seems to me the nineties where a time when a bassist for a punk band could just stop playing the root note and explore a bit

Matt Freeman. I'm surprised he doesn't get more attention. He has a great tone, and bass lines that are not only impressive, but very fun to play.

Chris #2s style has gone down hill lately. His basslines arent nearly as good as they were in mobalize and before. He hasnt even had any cool bass solos in their last 2 cds.
My favorite punk bass players are Dee Dee ramone. He inspired me to pick up the bass. Klaus floride of the dead kennedys. His basslines are great and fun to play. Alec from leftover crack. Listen to gang control. That bassline is so much fun. Jerry only from the misfits. Ken Casey from dropkick murphys. Tripp from the unseen. And matt freeman gets alot of atention on here, He is a good bass player but since rancid replaced brett with the guy from the used I cant even listen to them.

This discussion is nothing without Mike Watt, who in my opinion, not only helped form a unique ground breaking band (Minutemen), but continues to grow as a bassist, pushing the boundaries of what a bass can do. He is still putting out great music. I love his Missing Men project with Nels Cline.

Matt Freeman is the guy that made me want to play bass. I listened to AOCTW about a million times when I was in high school, and did the same to every record after that.

All defunct bands, but you did say punk:

Joe Lally of Fugazi deserves mention here. I'll add J. Robbins from G.I. to the list, too, and Matt Dresdner from The Gits.

Seems to me he gets plenty of attention.

Mike Watt and Joe Lally are huge influences of mine, probably top favorites in general not just out of punk players.

Do NOT be shameful of admiring one of the pioneers of expressive punk bass. No matter what album or what song, Mike's lines always, ALWAYS knock me dead. He's been an inspiration for me since I was 13. If it weren't for him, 90% of Green Day songs would be pretty freakin' boring.

I dunno why people never mention Phil from Subhumans in these lists. 'smatter, you guys don't like anarcho-punk? Here's a good example. They finish their first song, then go into "Society" and if the camera work weren't so bad, you could see Phil play: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=9LnqoycziIM

Punk:

Klaus Fluroide
Freeman (although I hate some of his faster stuff, and his stupid bass solos, they're fun but the silly roll in corona de ora or whatever it's called ruins the song)
Fat Mike
The guy from the Minutemen

Punk -> Hardcore:

Arthur from Gorilla Biscuits

Punk -> Hardcore -> Post-Hardcore

Joe Lally
What's his name from At the Drive-in
Me!

Dunno who I'd choose outta those guys as a favorite, Flea inspired me to pick up bass in the first place, but Freeman and Klaus definitely got me into really enjoying punk bass after only really playing the Offspring... If I were pushed I'd go with Klaus cos I like his style and especially his sound more, really got me into 15s, although getting them to sound good fro punk is something I'm still learning after getting my NV215, it's starting to get there though, won't ever be as cool as his sound though.
