Hey All,

Just got home from school and I'm currently listening to Rush's 1989 album presto. I haven't heard it in a while.

Just wondering if I could get some feedback from this album and people's thoughts of Rush from this period. They were kinda moving away from the synthesizers at this point. As always Geddy's playing and vocals is supurb.
Also, any favorite tracks? Mine, would be "Chain lightning".

Peece.

About a year ago I went through a period where all I was listening to in my car was a CD of Presto. An excellent, yet a bit understated album. At the time Rush had just gone from Mercury Records to Atlantic Records and I'm thinking that they probably felt that it would be a good time to ease up on the synths a bit. It was the first of four albums - the others being Roll The Bones, Counterparts, and Test For Echo - where Rush transitioned from a band with a heavy reliance on synths to their modern-day guitar-driven sound. Me, I'd say my favorite song is Presto, followed by Anagram For Mongo.

My all time favorite Rush song is off of Presto. 'The Pass' IMO, is their very best work. I also thoroughly enjoy 'Anagram (For Mongo) and 'Red Tide'

I liked The Pass, Scars, and Show Don't Tell, but other than that, the album was kinda...eh. I didn't like Presto that much, more to do with the sound of the album than the songs themselves.

I am a huge Rush fan, but Presto was my least favorite album of theirs. There are some good tunes on it, but alot of filler (IMO). It also came out right around the time my grandmother passed which was the first time I had to deal with a death in the family, so alot of those songs remind me of that time. Im sure that has something to do with me not being crazy about it.

I think that the overall production of the album was a bit too compressed. That said, the Pass is one of my all time favorites. Show don't Tell is a blazing, traditional Rush chopsfest!

Presto is an interesting transitory album back to a more rocking sound and away from the synthesizers, sort of like how Caress of Steel segued into the epic period. It's not a great album and I'm not crazy about the production but it has it's strengths along with some unusual Rush tracks.

Show don't tell and The pass are excellent and Red tide and Available light fall into the unusual and pretty good category. The rest of the album is either solid, Chain Lightning and Superconductor included, or largely forgettable. Geddy's Wal sound is upfront and crisp but the album sounds small.

The band realized that Hold Your Fire was the nexus of the 80's keyboards sound and had to figure out a new direction. Not to mention Geddy was sick of all those damn keyboards! It's an Ok Rush record and one that had to be made to move forward. I wonder if it was hard to write and record?

Thanks all, for the reply's. It truly was a changing period for them like "Abacab" was for Genesis. Can't wait for the induction!!
Rush needs to get their due.
