Dale Peters (James Gang)

James Gang Rides Again and Thirds are chock full of great bass playing by Dale Peters, as well as later post-Walsh albums like Bang!. He and Jimmy Fox constituted a monster rhythm section.

But Dale seems all but forgotten these days. After the 70s, he seems to have disappeared entirely from the music scene. He might very well have been burned out from the touring/lifestyle situation of that era, and the James Gang never was able to sustain much commercial success after Walsh split in '71, so it might have been an entirely voluntary decision on his part.

But I often wonder what Dale has been up to all these years later. I know there have been a couple of James Gang reunions every once in a great while, but what else?

this is what i was able to find:

"Dale is not only a musician, but a longtime recording engineer and at one time was Director of Remote Recording for Westwood One Network. Dale has engineered over 100 recordings and has done over 350 live recordings for artists such as Aerosmith, R.E.M., CSN, U2, The Police, Todd Rundgren, John Mellencamp, Jimmy Page, Don Henley, Neil Young, Roger Waters, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue,Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and Ozzie Osbourne. He was the recording and mixing engineer for the live television coverage for the “Amnesty International Festival”, “Farm Aid” (1985-1990) and the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” , the first live satellite broadcast ever to originate from the Soviet Union. He also co-engineered Van Halen’s’ “Live Without A Net” music video, the best selling long form music video at that time. Dale either recorded or mixed many of MTV’s “Unplugged” concerts, and all of their “Spring Break” concerts during a five year period, and he recorded and mixed Madonna’s first live worldwide broadcast via satellite from the Orange Bowl.

"Dale has been awarded many gold records, an AMPEX Golden Reel Award and a Society for Communicating Arts Award for audio work performed throughout the country. He was awarded a Grammy Certificate for engineering the #1 Grammy winning song “Let It Whip” from The Dazz Band album “Keep It Live.

"Dale continues to play bass with the James Gang and is still writing, producing, sharing his knowledge and recording songs with other artists now at his own studio.

"Dale is an accomplished speaker and available for industry keynote lectures and anecdotal after-dinner events."

Wow, thanks Jimmy, great info!

I'm glad Dale has continued to do his thing through the years even if it is more behind the console than on stage.

I hope he still has that sunburst 50s P bass with the split-coil pickup, and that he straps it on now and again.

Here's some cool James Gang "Walk Away" footage circa '71. Those of you who are already fans have likely seen it before (from European TV I believe), but good stuff nonetheless.
