hey man! Thank you!
I dunno really... some people will always be a little less than open minded when it comes to electric bass and jazz (especially 6-string).. to be honest, I prefer the sound of an upright in most jazz contexts myself! I just don't own one or play one and I love the challenge of playing with great jazz musicians so I do what I can. I think the key is just playing as well as you possibly can and respecting the music and the word gets out (slowly sometimes, but it DOES get out).
I work less than I could here in Portland because I don't play upright and that's just a fact of life... I hope to one day get some upright chops together and start doubling, but we just do what we can. Like I said, if you're really playing the music and not noodling too much, MOST good musicians don't care if you're playing a rubber band... if it's good, it's good!

how did you start to get gigs playing jazz on electric. all the jazz gigs i can find around me want acoustic bass. but i think my voice is really 6 string. there seems to be a prejudice againt electric bassist near me. for example there a kid in the same music program at college that i am in. he's decent but tends to lose the groove alot. especially when he is on upright. and his intonation is horrible. yet everyone wants him to play because he plays upright. but it's not just at school. and i hope i don't sound like a whiney little brat but i just can't seem to over come these road blocks with electric. any advice on getting gigs ? |
