Ever feel like you're a slow learner? Late bloomer?

Ok, take that feeling and add the temptation to throw in the towel and leave things to the truly gifted ones:

‪Amedício jr com Pipoquinha Bass - música - The chicken‬‏ - YouTube

C'mon -- it's just not fair that he can play like that, on a bass that's about as long as he is tall!

I'd rather choose to play on my own, and truly love it, than have my parents force me to play as a child...

The kid is a killer. But what are you gonna do, there's always someone better than you, if you let that stop you life is going to be long boring journey my friend.

He is not quite as young as he looks. He is pretty small for his age, but he is still a teenager!

I was really just being dramatic about the "throw in the towel" thing. I actually find him inspiring.

The thing that knocks me out is that he's far from just the usual child prodigy chops. He's the total professional package.
Whether you care for the style of music or not (and I happen to), you're witnessing:

a) Supportive ensemble playing (see the other videos too). The roots are solidly there exactly when they need to be. He's loose and fairly busy, but he doesn't get in the way.

b) His time and feel and tone are all excellent.

c) When he solos, he doesn't just impress with a lot of chops. It's evident that he understands the harmony and stacked chord extensions very well and very intuitively.
It's also evident that he likes this kind of music, and listens to it a lot. He knows exactly what kind of soloing is appropriate.

d) He's not sweating in the least. He's in his element. And he's enjoying himself.

Watching some precocious young players is a bit like watching trained bears play soccer. You don't watch because they're displaying a high ideal of athleticism, you watch because it's amazing they can do it at all.

Not so with this young guy. I'd watch with pleasure even if he was 50.

I love it! Doesn't look forced into it to me either. That kid's got what I call the "IT" factor. Sure, he did some wood shedding....but he gets "it" and got it a lot quicker than most. How else could you be so good and so pro at that young of an age? Hell, I don't even understand that kind of music. I like it but if you threw me into the middle of that I wouldn't have a clue what to do!

Good for him!

LOL At the title!

somehow I knew it was gonna be this video...seen it before...

but all jealousy aside, doesn't make me want to quit..makes me want to try harder...

It's like Golf..just because I'll never play as good as Tiger Woods or Arnold Palmer doesn't mean I won't use it as an excuse to escape from Family Duties once a week for 5-8 hours....

I actually haven't seen that one before.

I've seen this one many times.

Total control of the fretboard. And he smiles too.

Ridiculous.

Reminds me of the 1st time I saw/heard Victor Wooten (he may have been 13?). His groove & rhythm were well beyond what I had seen thus far.
After I got over that, some 18-year old guy from DC pops up & takes over as bassist in my best friend's band...this was Oteil Burbridge. Amadeus was in the theatres at that time...I could definitely relate to Salieri.
The kid in the video reminds me of Oteil...very relaxed, at ease...everything pbasswil said.
Ya just gotta tip your hat to the naturals, enjoy the ride, & then move on...they're touched by God.

In a different thread, there's an URB prodigy (he doubles on electric...but not as well as what the OP linked).

There is a young kid here in Detroit like that.
But the general look on his face is very empty and expressionless- except for maybe a smile that is pasted on.
His dad pushes him in front of everyone.
The nutty thing is, all these bass players in town are all about this kid but they just don't see it. All they see is the regergitated Marcus Miller licks from a young kid.
You guys can figure it out who I'm talking about- he has videos all over youtube.

Yes. He's playing a Fodera bass.

To me it's not the chops. It's that he plays with the confidence and taste of someone who has been at it for thirty years.

It does seem he has been "groomed" for this gig: how and when to smile, bow, pass the ball, etc.

Thanks for posting that.

It sure is Fodora-inspired, and it has something that looks like a butterfly on the headstock from a distance. But it's actually a Brazilian bass called D'Mark:

I don't know how recently he acquired his stage poise, but imho this is far from his debut; he's already been around the block! He's simply at home on stage, knows how to play his role in the band, and is happy to play it -- just like most pro players.
